In the early days of Donald Trump’s presidency, discussions about the future of Saudi Arabia took center stage. Eight years ago, senior advisers convened in the White House Situation Room to address Saudi Arabia’s internal struggles. The pivotal question was whether to engage with seasoned leaders or to embrace a new generation willing to embrace ambitious reforms.
Inside those discussions, Jared Kushner strongly advocated for the younger leaders, notably Mohammed bin Salman, often referred to as MBS. Kushner argued for a transformational vision, one that moved away from the conservative and insular nature of the older generation.
The younger leadership in Saudi Arabia aimed to diversify the economy, moving beyond oil dependency, while also creating a modern society characterized by technological innovation and social advancements. Efforts included standing against Islamic extremism and fostering collaboration to combat terrorism. Importantly, these leaders expressed a readiness to explore a peace agreement with Israel as a pivotal step towards broader regional peace.
President Trump made a bold foreign policy decision in support of this new generation of Sunni leaders. By reaffirming his commitment to Israel and distancing the U.S. from Barack Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran, Trump sought a path for Middle Eastern peace that connected Riyadh and Jerusalem rather than Tehran.
This week, Trump’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE served as a symbolic acknowledgment of the progress made. He confidently stated, “A new generation of leaders is transcending age-old conflicts and divisions, crafting a future defined by commerce instead of chaos—where diverse peoples collaborate instead of causing destruction.”
The Gulf states, particularly led by Saudi Arabia, have witnessed unprecedented advancements in recent years, a feat even amidst challenges from the current U.S. administration. These nations played crucial roles in dismantling ISIS and countering Islamist extremism while facilitating the Abraham Accords, which established formal relationships between Israel and several Arab states, including the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.
During his recent trip, the Gulf Arab leaders urged Trump to initiate dialogue with new leaders in Syria. In a bold move for peace, he proposed reducing sanctions on Syria, offering an opportunity for transformation. If successful, this strategy could rewrite Syria’s troubled past, which has been characterized by conflict and extremism.
Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of Trump’s approach is his challenge to previous American foreign policy strategies. For two decades, the U.S. has engaged in various military interventions without achieving lasting stability in the region. Trump’s articulated vision opposes the concept of “forever wars” and emphasizes respect for national sovereignty. His stance advocates for a paradigm where diverse nations retain the right to determine their pathways without external imposition.
Reflecting on his first address to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump asserted the importance of respecting different cultures and governance structures. He framed America’s role not as a teacher, but as a model of possibility.
“In America, we do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone,” he stated, “but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to observe.”
Trump’s foreign policy stands on the principle of “Peace through Strength,” advocating for an integrated approach that encompasses military and diplomatic resilience. He expresses a deep desire to empower nations, aligning with the spirit of America’s own founding ideals, and encouraging countries worldwide to embody self-determination and control over their destinies.
Looking ahead, the hope remains that these diplomatic initiatives could foster lasting peace across the Middle East, allowing nations to move beyond historic conflicts and forge a new path grounded in collaboration and mutual respect.
