During a recent meeting with NATO leader Mark Rutte, former President Donald Trump mocked Democrats for their unwavering support of trans athletes competing in women’s and girls’ sports. He expressed a hope that the Democratic Party continues to advocate for this stance, suggesting it could harm their future electoral prospects.
While criticizing Democrats for their ongoing support of trans inclusion in sports, Trump claimed that 95% of Americans oppose the issue. He urged Republicans to capitalize on their opponents’ position, stating, “I saw this morning where one of them is pretty well known. One is arguing, fighting like crazy for men playing in women’s sports. I think it’s about a 95% issue, but in a way, I want Democrats to keep doing it, because I don’t think they can win a race.”
He advised Republican leaders to withhold discussions on the topic until just before elections, emphasizing the importance of timing. “I tell Republicans, ‘Don’t bring that subject up right now, because there’s no election right now. But about a week before the election, bring it up, because we can’t lose,'” he said.
This marked the second consecutive day that Trump ridiculed Democrats regarding the issue. During a previous meeting with Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin, he stated, “Who would allow men to play in women’s sports? And they’re still fighting it… It’s gotta be a 95% issue.” He further condemned the views of a prominent Democrat arguing for trans inclusion, insisting that it harms and demeans women.
Trump’s assertion that 95% of the public opposes trans inclusion lacks empirical backing. Nonetheless, data suggests that a significant majority of Americans, including many Democrats, are not in favor of allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
A recent survey conducted by the New York Times/Ipsos revealed that 79% of Americans believe biological males should not compete in women’s sports. Among Democratic respondents, 67% shared this sentiment. Additionally, a Gallup poll from the previous year indicated that nearly 70% of Americans agree that biological men should be excluded from women’s sports.
This topic has emerged as a pivotal issue for many voters, influencing their decisions in the most recent elections. A national exit poll published by the Concerned Women for America legislative action committee found that 70% of moderate voters viewed Trump’s opposition to trans athletes as significant. Notably, 6% considered it the most critical issue, while 44% deemed it very important.
Identifying trans athletes as a crucial campaign issue, Trump took a strong stance against their participation in women’s sports throughout the 2024 election campaign. His campaign messaging resonated with voters, featuring ads that highlighted his opposition to Democratic views on gender identity. One notable slogan, “Kamala is for they/them, Donald Trump is for you,” gained traction for its effectiveness.
As part of his commitment to this stance, Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports” on February 5. However, several Democrat-led states have chosen to defy this order, allowing trans athletes to compete with females.
In response to these actions, Trump’s administration initiated investigations against California, Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Maine for potential violations of Title IX due to their continued support for trans athletes. Findings from Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services indicated that Maine had indeed violated Title IX. Subsequently, the Department of Agriculture withheld millions in funding to eight universities within the state.
Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled Congress attempted to establish a clearer legal framework to enforce a national trans-athlete ban through the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This effort faced a setback when Senate Democrats filibustered the bill, effectively preventing it from progressing.
Conservative activist Riley Gaines has committed to supporting Trump’s efforts to leverage this issue against Democrats. She voiced intentions to assist in unseating incumbents who opposed the bill in the upcoming 2026 midterms and the 2028 elections.
As these debates continue to unfold, the tension surrounding trans athletes in women’s sports could play a significant role in shaping electoral dynamics. With a considerable portion of the electorate demonstrating a strong stance on this issue, both parties may be motivated to recalibrate their messaging in light of prevailing public sentiment.
While Trump’s comments and legislative maneuvers reflect broader cultural clashes, the question remains whether this will galvanize voter bases or if it will contribute to growing divisions within the electorate. As Trump signals a desire to challenge Democratic positions on gender identity, the ramifications of this issue could reverberate through future elections.
