During a detailed interview on NBC, President Donald Trump engaged with host Kristen Welker, raising a question about the current state of border security. Trump asked the ‘Meet the Press’ moderator if it sounded favorable to report that the border is at its most secure point ever, despite the challenges faced during the Biden administration.
Welker noted that recent statistics indicated border crossings were at record lows, prompting her to ask Trump about his confidence in border security. The president responded affirmatively, stating, ‘it’s really secure.’ Subsequently, he posed his own question to Welker.
‘When you say that, doesn’t it just sound good? After years of being mishandled by an administration that allowed unchecked immigration, with individuals from various backgrounds pouring through an open border—criminals, and those escaping mental institutions—wouldn’t it be wonderful to say it is the most secure it has ever been? Isn’t that a positive statement?’ Trump articulated during the interview.
Following this exchange, Welker redirected the conversation towards Trump’s emergency declaration regarding the ongoing border crisis. She inquired about the timeline for potentially lifting that order.
‘Currently, the situation at the border isn’t an emergency,’ Trump replied. ‘Everything is interconnected, but the major emergency now involves countless individuals we wish to deport and some judges insisting on court appearances for every case.’
Trump went on to state that he did not intend to lift the emergency declaration, suggesting that the situation remains critical.
The conversation also touched upon rumors concerning Trump’s aspirations for a third presidential term. He firmly dismissed the speculation during the discussion.
‘As far as I know, that isn’t permitted. I’m not sure if that aligns with constitutional guidelines,’ Trump mentioned. ‘However, this is not a direction I am pursuing.’
In a broader context, the White House celebrated the first 100 days of the Biden administration recently, emphasizing its initiatives to address illegal immigration. This effort was highlighted during a press briefing led by Border Czar Tom Homan alongside White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Both officials underscored the sharp reductions in border crossing numbers, confirming that new executive orders aimed at deportations and stricter border enforcement have been implemented.
Earlier in April, the Trump administration reported that approximately 100,000 illegal immigrants had been deported, but further details were not provided during the Monday briefing.
This ongoing dialogue surrounding immigration and border security remains pivotal as the Biden administration continues to navigate a complex landscape filled with challenges and public scrutiny.
