President Donald Trump declared on Friday that he has terminated several members of the Kennedy Center’s board, including the existing chairman, David Rubenstein. In a surprising move, Trump appointed himself as the new chairman.
In his announcement shared on Truth Social, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Rubenstein’s vision, stating, “We do not share [the same] Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.” He indicated that a new board will be established in the near future and emphasized his confidence in his new role by declaring it “amazing.”
Amid his announcements, Trump raised concerns regarding recent events hosted at the Kennedy Center. He mentioned that the venue featured drag shows specifically aimed at youth last year, promising that “THIS WILL STOP.” This reference points to events like the Dancing Queens Drag Brunch, held at the Kennedy Center’s Roof Terrace Restaurant.
The October event showcased some of Washington D.C.’s top drag performers, including the 2024 Capital Pride Honoree, Tula. The celebration aimed to highlight the diversity of D.C.’s queer community and featured tickets priced at nearly $100, which included bottomless mimosas.
Following Trump’s controversial announcement, traffic surged on the Kennedy Center’s website, disrupting access for many users. The center reported a high volume of visitors, forcing hundreds to queue online just to navigate the site.
In his post, Trump referred to the Kennedy Center as “an American jewel.” He insisted that the center should represent the nation’s “brightest stars” on its stage. Trump’s commitment to enhancing the Kennedy Center’s reputation was evident as he stated, “At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
As of Friday evening, it remains unclear which members of the Board of Trustees have been dismissed. The lack of transparency raises questions about the future direction of the Kennedy Center and its programming under Trump’s leadership.
The reshuffling of board members and Trump’s self-appointment comes amid widespread discussions about arts, culture, and representation in public institutions. With potential shifts in programming and leadership, observers are keenly watching how these changes will shape the Kennedy Center’s future.
