President Donald Trump recently issued a stark warning regarding the Department of Government Efficiency (often abbreviated as DOGE), referring to it as a “monster that might have to go back and eat Elon” after tech magnate Elon Musk amplified his attacks on Trump’s economic legislation dubbed “One Big Beautiful Bill.” This statement reflects the ongoing tensions between the former president and the high-profile entrepreneur.
During a press interaction on Tuesday, as he prepared for a trip to the Florida Everglades to inspect a new migrant detention center, Trump remarked, “DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible?” He elaborated that Musk was “very upset” over the potential termination of electric vehicle mandates, which significantly impact his company, Tesla.
Trump’s comments were prompted by a query about the possibility of deporting Musk, who hails from South Africa. Trump replied candidly, stating: “I don’t know, we’ll have to take a look.” This offhand comment hints at the complex relationship that has unfolded between the two influential figures.
The tension between Trump and Musk has become increasingly apparent since early June when Trump indicated that his stance on electric vehicle mandates had shifted. As part of his legislative agenda, Trump signed resolutions on June 12 aimed at repealing California’s stringent diesel engine regulations and electric vehicle sales mandates. He celebrated these actions, declaring, “my signature will kill the California mandates forever.”
While discussing his position on vehicles, Trump articulated his preference for a variety of cars, stating, “not everybody wants an electric car. I want to have maybe gasoline. Maybe electric, maybe a hybrid. Maybe someday a hydrogen. You have a hydrogen car; it has one problem: it blows up.” His comments showcase a not-so-subtle critique of the push for electric vehicles.
Musk amplified his political rhetoric this week, issuing warnings to lawmakers that he would actively campaign against them if they supported Trump’s spending initiatives. He took to social media, posting: “Anyone who campaigned on the PROMISE of REDUCING SPENDING, but continues to vote on the BIGGEST DEBT ceiling increase in HISTORY will see their face on this poster in the primary next year.”
This statement came with a controversial image of Pinocchio engulfed in flames, bearing the words “LIAR Voted to increase America’s DEBT by 5,000,000,000.00.” Musk’s approach reflects a strategic decision to leverage his considerable influence in political circles, especially among Republican lawmakers.
It’s important to note that Musk had previously played a role in the Trump administration as a special government employee, assisting in leading the Department of Government Efficiency. He frequently participated in Cabinet meetings, signaling a close affiliation with Trump during his tenure. However, Musk’s stint with DOGE concluded at the end of May, coinciding with escalating debates surrounding the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
This proposed budget reconciliation bill is designed to advance Trump’s agenda on critical issues including taxation, immigration, energy policy, national defense, and management of the national debt. The legislative measure is currently under deliberation in the Senate.
Musk has found allies in several Republican lawmakers, including Kentucky’s Senator Rand Paul, who oppose the proposed legislation, arguing it would raise the debt ceiling by an alarming $5 trillion. Musk’s criticism of the bill represents a sharp pivot from his previously supportive stance towards the Trump administration. His recent posts on social media threaten Republican officials who back the legislation, escalating the conversation around political accountability within the party.
In a pointed response to Musk’s threats, Trump shared his own thoughts with the media from the White House on Tuesday. Trump suggested that DOGE should closely assess how government subsidies contribute to Musk’s various businesses. He asserted, “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
Trump underscored that his skepticism towards electric vehicle mandates had been longstanding, indexing it as a core part of his political campaign. He reiterated that while electric vehicles can be a viable option, it’s unfair to force every consumer to adopt them.
The exchanges between Musk and Trump are symptomatic of a larger divide within Republican ranks concerning fiscal policy and governmental subsidies. Following Musk’s critical positioning, Trump remarked that Musk is “upset” over the potential loss of the EV mandate, adding ominously, “He could lose a lot more than that.”
Musk had previously expressed disappointment at the progression of Trump’s spending legislation, arguing that it undermined the efforts of DOGE. In a message dated earlier this year, he urged Republican lawmakers to actively resist fiscal irresponsibility, emphasizing that bankrupting America is not acceptable.
Musk urged supporters to contact their Senators and Congress members, stating: “Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.” His efforts to shape the legislative outcome demonstrate the growing power and reach of influential entrepreneurs in political discourse.
As discussions about fiscal responsibility and governmental spending continue to dominate political debates, the rivalry between Trump and Musk will likely play a significant role in shaping public opinion. The stakes are high, with the July 4 deadline looming for passing critical spending legislation. As public figures like Musk take bold stances against spending bills, the political ramifications could reverberate through future elections.
Ultimately, the discourse surrounding Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” will test the loyalties and principles of lawmakers in both parties, while Musk’s vocal criticisms may shift voters’ perspectives on traditional Republican values.
