President Donald Trump shared his heartfelt condolences on Tuesday following a tragic event in India’s Kashmir region where gunmen killed at least 20 individuals. The attack has drawn international attention and spurred condemnation at the highest levels.
“This news is deeply disturbing,” Trump stated in a post on TRUTH Social. He affirmed that the United States stands firmly with India in its fight against terrorism. He also expressed his prayers for those who lost their lives and for the speedy recovery of the injured. Additionally, he assured Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India of America’s unwavering support during this challenging time.
During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump had been briefed on the incident by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. Leavitt indicated that Trump aims to communicate with Prime Minister Modi as soon as possible to offer his condolences directly.
Leavitt emphasized the importance of solidarity in facing acts of terrorism, saying, “These horrific events remind those of us working toward global peace and stability of our critical mission. We will share details of that conversation later today.”
This attack unfolded during a visit by Vice President JD Vance and his family to India. Vance met with Modi prior to the incident, delivering a speech that focused on strengthening economic ties between the two nations in Jaipur.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Vice President Vance expressed sorrow over the attack. He and his wife, Usha, extended their condolences to the victims and their families. Vance reflected on their recent experiences in India, noting the beauty of the country and its warm people, while affirming their thoughts and prayers were with those mourning the tragedy.
Reports indicate that gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists at a resort in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir, marking a frightening escalation in violence. Traditionally, tourists have enjoyed relative safety in this area. Indian police characterized this incident as a terror attack, alleging it is part of a larger trend of violence by militants opposing Indian governance.
The incident has been described as unprecedented in its scale. Omar Abdullah, a prominent political leader in the region, stated on social media that such violence directed at civilians is significantly more severe than incidents seen in recent years. Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least four heavily armed assailants who targeted numerous tourists at close range, according to insights provided by senior police officials.
As a result, more than three dozen individuals have sustained injuries, with many being classified as critical. Most of the deceased were reportedly Indian nationals.
The affected area, particularly Baisaran meadow, is a well-known tourist attraction nestled within the picturesque landscape of Pahalgam. This region, renowned for its snow-capped mountains and lush pine forests, has historically drawn significant tourist traffic. While millions of visitors have experienced its beauty, a heavy security presence has marked their experiences, including checkpoints and patrolling soldiers.
Kashmir remains a focal point of contention between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, both of whom claim sovereignty over the entire territory despite governing different portions. The attack has reignited concerns over safety and security in a region already fraught with tension.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces have initiated extensive search efforts to locate the attackers. India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, has vowed to impose severe repercussions on those responsible for this brutal act. Having arrived in Srinagar, he convened a high-level meeting with security officials to address the situation. Shah also informed the public that Prime Minister Modi, who was abroad at the time, had been updated about the situation.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a key political figure and religious leader in Kashmir, condemned the attack, labeling it as cowardly. He pointed out that the region has a rich tradition of hospitality towards visitors and stated that such violence contradicts the core values of Kashmiri culture.
The world is closely monitoring developments following this tragic event. Leaders and citizens alike are calling for a united front against terror and support for the victims and their families. The need for diplomatic engagement and cooperation in combating terrorism remains at the forefront of discussions.
In light of these tragic events, the international community is encouraged to promote peace and solidarity with those affected. India’s resolve against terrorism is expected to intensify as they work towards ensuring the safety of their citizens and visitors alike in the weeks and months ahead.
