President Donald Trump reached out to the mother of a congressional intern tragically killed in a shooting in Washington, D.C. He conveyed his deep sorrow for the loss, stating that he and Melania Trump are devastated for the grieving family.
Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, aged 21, was a dedicated student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst when he was fatally shot on June 30. The tragic event occurred around 10:28 p.m. on the 1200 block of 7th Street, Northwest, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Tarpinian-Jachym was in the nation’s capital serving as an intern for Rep. Ron Estes, a Republican from Kansas.
During the shooting, an adult female and a 16-year-old male were also victims but survived. Authorities remain actively investigating the case and no suspects are currently in custody. Witnesses reported that multiple individuals exited a vehicle and opened fire on a group, including Tarpinian-Jachym, who was unfortunately not the intended target of the shooting.
In a compassionate letter dated July 17, the Trumps expressed their sorrow to Eric’s parents. They called the violent act that claimed Eric’s life senseless and highlighted the lasting impact he had on those around him.
Trump wrote, “While we may never fully understand the impact that Eric has had during his meaningful life, we know he will be remembered for his kindness, faithfulness, and devotion to your family and his many friends.” He continued by noting Eric’s dedication to his country and the pride Congressman Estes took in having Eric represent his office.
In his letter, Trump assured the family, “Eric will be held in my heart, and I promise never to forget or forgive the terrible act that took him from us. Please know that my Administration will not stop fighting to clean up our streets and ensure law and order.” He concluded with a heartfelt wish, asking that God hold Eric in eternal love and grant peace and strength to his family.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Tamara Jachym, Eric’s mother, shared memories of her son’s resilience in the face of adversity. She noted that despite undergoing significant challenges, including severe dyslexia as a child, Eric persevered and succeeded in his academic and personal pursuits.
“He had ambition because he faced adversity in his life. A lot of things have happened to him. And he did struggle initially, like he had severe dyslexia as a first-grader. He couldn’t read or write, but boy, he could do it. He taught himself mathematics and how to play chess from YouTube,” Jachym recounted.
Jachym celebrated her son’s bright personality, saying that he felt accepted in D.C. for his intelligence and genuine kindness, underscoring how his smile reflected his true character.
In the wake of this tragedy, the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the individuals responsible for Eric’s death. They are offering a $40,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Authorities urge anyone with information to reach out and assist in bringing justice to the family.
This case has ignited discussions about safety and violence in the community, prompting federal entities to take a prominent role in the investigation. As the family copes with their loss, the community rallies around them, reflecting on the importance of unity and support in the face of tragedy.
