Former President Donald Trump shared a revelation on Monday regarding Dr. Ben Carson during the heated 2016 Republican primary. According to Trump, Carson expressed unwavering confidence in his potential victory, suggesting that divine intervention was at play.
During his remarks at the White House Religious Liberty Commission event at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., Trump recounted a pivotal moment from the 2016 primary. He stated, “He was a very tough opponent. We were fighting it out among a total of 18 candidates, including myself. After the first debate, Ben approached me and said, ‘You know you’re going to win, don’t you?’
Trump reflected on his initial skepticism in response to Carson’s prediction. “I remember saying, ‘No, I don’t know that. I think I’m going to win, but I am uncertain.’ This was my first experience in such a high-stakes political arena. All my opponents were seasoned governors and senators with significant political backgrounds. Yet, Ben asserted, ‘No, you’re going to win it, because God wants you to win it.’
The anecdote drew laughter from the audience, especially when Trump humorously pointed out that Carson did not yield his candidacy despite his prophetic assertion. Trump quipped, “But that didn’t stop him… When is this guy going to quit?” This moment highlighted the friendly rivalry among competitors during the primaries.
In the early stages of the 2016 campaign, Carson gained traction in national GOP polls. However, he could not secure a victory in any primaries or caucuses, ultimately suspending his campaign on March 4, 2016. He later endorsed Trump, affirming the accuracy of his earlier claim as Trump went on to win the presidency.
Following his primary defeat, Carson was appointed to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development during Trump’s first term. Reflecting on their relationship, Trump praised Carson, stating, “He was a tough one, but we love Ben. Ben’s special.” This endorsement illustrates the bond that formed between the two men despite the competitive nature of the political landscape.
Transitioning back to the topic of spirituality, Trump emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to religion in the United States. He remarked, “America was founded on faith, as we know. I have said for a long time that when faith diminishes, our country seems to weaken. Under my administration, we are steadfast in defending our rights and restoring our identity as a nation under God. We will always be one nation under God.” Trump’s strong language reflects his ongoing advocacy for religious values in American life.
He urged the audience to prioritize faith, declaring, “We must bring back religion in America, making it stronger than ever before.” This statement aligns with his broader agenda of intertwining faith with governance, underscoring the Trump administration’s dedication to addressing matters perceived as threats to free expression and religious liberty.
The event came on the heels of the second meeting of the Religious Liberty Commission. Established earlier in the year through an executive order, this group operates as a component of Trump’s new White House Faith Office. The commission’s principal goal is to protect Americans’ right to practice their faith without restrictions, particularly in educational settings, and to identify what the administration deems as emerging threats to First Amendment protections.
Trump’s speech and the accompanying panel discussions highlight a crucial moment in the ongoing dialogue regarding the role of faith in contemporary American society. As this narrative unfolds, the intersection of politics and spirituality remains a focal point for many voters and policymakers alike.
In summary, Trump’s recollection of Carson’s prophecy not only reflects a personal anecdote but also illustrates the broader theme of religious commitment that resonates within the context of American governance. The Trump administration continues to advocate for increased visibility of faith within the public sphere, challenging the nation to remember its foundational beliefs as it moves forward.
