On Sunday, President Donald Trump marked the one-year anniversary of an assassination attempt against him. He expressed a belief that divine intervention spared his life that day, allowing him to fulfill his mission of enhancing America’s strength and security.
The assassination attempt occurred during a campaign rally held on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania. At the rally, Trump sustained minor injuries after a bullet grazed his ear. Tragically, one individual lost their life, while two others were injured during the chaos that unfolded.
A dedicated Secret Service sniper neutralized the threat by fatally shooting the assailant, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old who had aimed to disrupt the rally from an elevated position.
Trump recounted the harrowing moments during the event, stating, “One year ago today, at 6:11 pm—eight minutes after taking the stage on the grounds of Butler Farms to address thousands of Americans gathered at a campaign rally—rifle fire broke out, and an assassin’s bullet came within a quarter inch of ending my life and silencing our movement to restore American greatness.”
He went on to emphasize, “Yet, by the hand of providence and the grace of Almighty God, my life was spared.” Trump used this moment to reinforce what he sees as the enduring spirit of America, stating, “As we commemorate one year since the harrowing events of July 13, 2024, we reaffirm that the American spirit has and will always triumph over forces of evil and destruction.”
During his reflection, Trump commended those who acted courageously at the rally, including first responders and fellow attendees who stepped up to help the injured. He described these individuals as heroes who responded selflessly amid the turmoil.
Trump remarked, “Those who carry scars from that July evening defended our Republic during one of our nation’s darkest hours—running to the injured amid chaos and uncertainty to provide comfort and lifesaving care.” He highlighted the swift actions of doctors and emergency personnel who rushed to assist the wounded, as well as rallygoers who led others to safety.
In a poignant tribute, Trump stated, “These men and women arrived at the rally grounds as ordinary Americans, but left as heroes. They represent the very best of our nation, and we are forever indebted for their kindness and compassion.”
Trump took a moment to honor Corey Comperatore, one of the rally attendees who tragically lost his life while trying to protect his family. He said, “The world will never forget the tragic loss of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter, veteran, and devoted husband and father. When gunfire erupted, Corey did not hesitate to protect his wife and two daughters. He died a hero, and we are eternally grateful for his inspiring love, valor, and faithfulness.”
The violent incident in Butler raised significant questions regarding security protocols. Concerns intensified over how Crooks was able to access a vantage point from which to fire at Trump, leading to scrutiny of the Secret Service and subsequent resignations within the agency.
Further issues arose following another incident later that year, in which a gunman gained access to shrubbery outside one of Trump’s golf courses. This prompted calls for a reassessment of the agency’s security measures.
Under new leadership appointed by Trump, the Secret Service has begun addressing the gaps revealed by the Butler shooting. Nonetheless, questions linger regarding potential security lapses and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the gunman’s motive.
In his statement, Trump reiterated a strong conviction that divine providence had a purpose in saving his life. He stated, “It remains my firm conviction that God alone saved me that day for a righteous purpose: to restore our beloved Republic to greatness and to rescue our Nation from those who seek its ruin.”
Reflecting on the country’s trajectory, he suggested that America is experiencing a new Golden Age, stating, “One year after the attempt on my life in Butler, our country is in the midst of a new Golden Age. History will remember the would-be assassin for his cowardice and failure, but the magnificent legacy of the heroes of July 13, 2024, will forever be etched upon the heart of our nation.”
On the same day, Trump spoke to reporters and remarked on his reluctance to dwell on the attempted assassination, saying, “I don’t like to think about it much. I have a job to do, so I don’t like to think about it much. It’s a little bit of a dangerous profession being president, but I really don’t like to think about it. Better off not thinking about it.”
Trump’s reflections serve as a reminder of both the personal and national challenges faced over the past year. As the nation moves forward, the resilience demonstrated during the chaotic events of July 13 remains a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of America.
