Trump Supports ICE Action at Hyundai Plant While Advocating for Skilled Foreign Workers

On Sunday, President Donald Trump commended U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for its recent operation that targeted undocumented South Korean workers at a Hyundai battery plant in Georgia. Trump emphasized that while the ICE actions were warranted, the United States should also consider allowing foreign experts to temporarily reside in the country to train American workers in specialized industries.

Details of the ICE Operation

ICE reported that 475 individuals, predominantly South Korean nationals, were apprehended at the construction site of the battery plant. Hyundai, the owner of the site, clarified that the detained workers were not direct employees of the company.

Training Americans in Advanced Industries

When pressed about the ICE operations, Trump told reporters that the expertise needed for advanced industries, particularly battery manufacturing, is lacking among American workers. He stated, “If you don’t have people in this country right now that know about batteries, maybe we should help them along.” Trump cited a need for skilled trainers, particularly in fields such as shipbuilding and computer manufacturing.

The Need for a Balanced Approach

Trump further articulated that the best method to equip Americans with necessary skills is by bringing in professionals experienced in specific sectors. He mentioned, however, that it is equally critical to address the issue of unauthorized workers in the country. “We do have to work something out where we bring in experts so that our people can be trained to do it themselves,” he added.

Encouraging Legal Immigration for Skilled Workers

In a message on Truth Social, Trump encouraged foreign companies that invest in the U.S. to follow immigration laws. He promised to pursue changes that would facilitate the arrival of skilled workers legally. His message underscored a reciprocal approach, stating, “Your investments are welcome, and we encourage you to LEGALLY bring your very smart people, with great technical talent, to build world-class products.” He expressed a commitment to ensure that this process would be swift and lawful.

South Korea’s Response to the Raid

On the same day as Trump’s remarks, the South Korean government successfully negotiated with U.S. authorities to secure the release of the detained workers. President Lee Jae Myung’s office announced that South Korea would send a charter flight to bring the apprehended workers home in the forthcoming days.
