EXCLUSIVE When President Donald Trump announced during his appearance on Fox & Friends that Memphis would be a focal point in his national anti-crime campaign, Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee highlighted his ongoing efforts to combat crime in the city. Hagerty considered the safety of Memphians a serious concern, having actively collaborated with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and Senator Marsha Blackburn, as well as some Democratic representatives in West Tennessee. Residents have expressed frustration as crime rates continue to climb, especially in areas close to Beale Street.
Trump’s declaration regarding the deployment of the National Guard has sparked notable bipartisan support in Memphis, a city often regarded as blue within a predominantly red state. Hagerty acknowledged the efforts of Democratic city Mayor Paul Young and Congressman Steve Cohen, also a Democrat, in supporting extensive crime reductions.
“It’s a deep personal prayer of mine to see Memphis become one of the safest cities. It’s a great city,” Hagerty stated, commending Young and Cohen for backing initiatives to address crime in the community.
Young and Cohen have joined Hagerty, Blackburn, and Lee in supporting Operation Viper, which is a collaborative federal-state law enforcement project led mainly by the FBI. This operation has reportedly resulted in approximately 500 arrests of wanted suspects since its launch in July. While some reports indicate around 200 arrests by August, the success of this operation demonstrates a proactive approach to the escalating crime crisis.
The initiative was reportedly intensified this summer under the leadership of FBI Director Kash Patel, culminating in a significant announcement by Trump. Hagerty noted that both the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration have recently increased their resources in Memphis, showcasing how federal, state, and local agencies can unite to tackle serious crime effectively.
Fox News Digital made attempts to reach out to Young and Cohen for additional comments regarding the deployment of the National Guard. Young indicated his agreement with Governor Lee’s assertion that successful crime mitigation requires strong collaboration among local, state, and federal law enforcement.
On the same television program, Trump affirmed Hagerty’s observations, emphasizing the extraordinary cooperation displayed by local and state authorities in their collective efforts to address crime. According to Hagerty, this collaboration has led to a noticeable reduction in crime levels across the city.
Hagerty cautioned that despite the apparent support from Cohen and Young, there could still be resistance to federal intervention, which might complicate the political landscape for the Democratic mayor. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris criticized Trump’s announcement, labeling it a harmful intrusion that may incite fear among residents of Memphis.
Harris characterized the potential federal presence as disappointing, anti-democratic, and in direct violation of American norms and possibly federal law. He expressed concerns that such actions might create confusion and heightened anxiety within the communities, particularly impacting vulnerable populations adversely. Harris voiced intentions to take measures to prevent the National Guard’s deployment in Memphis.
Senator Hagerty commended Young for his decisive approach as a crime-focused mayor and praised Governor Lee’s plan to deploy an additional 50 Tennessee state troopers to assist in the federal effort. He stated, “We are currently evaluating the timing of the next phase. There is no reason to delay action in our quest to enhance public safety.” Hagerty underscored the need for united efforts, advocating that all avenues, including the involvement of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, be considered in the crime reduction strategy.
While Trump has also targeted immigration enforcement in major cities like Chicago, Hagerty clarified that the primary focus of their discussions has centered on crime. He acknowledged the possibility of illegal immigration being intertwined with the crime issue without dismissing the potential connection.
During the Fox & Friends broadcast, Trump explained that he chose Memphis due to challenges he faced in Chicago, hinting at a significantly different environment for collaboration in Memphis. Trump applauded the cooperation among local leaders, portraying it as essential to the effectiveness of the proposed actions.
The emphasis on a comprehensive approach to crime highlights the potential positive outcomes that could arise from local, state, and federal partnerships. As Memphis prepares to embrace these efforts, the involvement of diverse political leadership from both parties showcases a united front in addressing one of the city’s most pressing issues. Ultimately, how this initiative unfolds will become a focal point in discussing community safety and governance in Memphis.
