President Donald Trump marked a significant milestone on Monday by announcing the commencement of construction for a new White House ballroom. This long-awaited addition aims to enhance the East Wing’s capacity to host state visits and large gatherings. It will serve as a vital modernization step for one of America’s most iconic buildings.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I am pleased to announce that ground has been broken on the White House grounds to build the new, big, beautiful White House Ballroom. Completely separate from the White House itself, the East Wing is being fully modernized as part of this process, and will be more beautiful than ever when it is complete!”
Trump’s announcement highlighted the need for such a space, adding, “For more than 150 years, every President has dreamt about having a Ballroom at the White House to accommodate people for grand parties, State Visits, etc. I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway — with zero cost to the American Taxpayer!” He further revealed that private funding would come from various “generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly.”
During a briefing in July, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that construction of the grand ballroom, estimated to cost around $200 million, would begin in September. She assured reporters the project would be completed long before the end of Trump’s term.
Leavitt’s announcement follows Trump’s earlier personal financing of significant patriotic displays at the White House. This included the installation of two 88-foot American flags, an undertaking that reportedly cost about $50,000 each.
Leavitt elucidated some of the current limitations faced by the White House regarding formal functions. She noted, “The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance.” She emphasized that the upcoming ballroom would be a much-needed and exquisite addition to the White House.
As with any major construction project on federal property, security remains a paramount concern. Leavitt indicated that the United States Secret Service will implement necessary security enhancements and modifications during the construction phase to ensure everything runs smoothly.
This ambitious project aims to provide a dedicated space for various official events, including state dinners and ceremonial gatherings. The planned ballroom will span an impressive 90,000 square feet, accommodating approximately 650 seated guests. Importantly, it is designed to remain true to the classical architecture that defines the existing White House structure.
The new ballroom will replace the current East Wing of the White House, which has long lacked a formal ballroom venue. Trump’s decision to initiate this project reflects his administration’s commitment to enhancing the functioning and aesthetic appeal of the White House.
Trump opted for a well-respected team of architects and construction professionals to bring the ballroom vision to life. McCrery Architects will lead the design efforts, while Clark Construction takes charge of the build. Additionally, AECOM will provide essential engineering support throughout the project.
As plans unfold for this new ballroom, the anticipation surrounding the project continues to mount. Trump is positioning this addition as a key development in the legacy of the White House, aimed at fostering events that celebrate American values and host distinguished guests from around the world.
The ballroom is not just a construction project; it symbolizes an enduring commitment to enhancing the cultural and social fabric of the nation’s executive residence. This venue will undoubtedly serve generations to come, hosting events that celebrate significant milestones and foster diplomatic relations.
As America watches this development closely, one thing remains clear: the newly designed ballroom promises to be an exquisite addition to the history and functionality of the White House.
