Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice recently revealed on “Fox & Friends” that President Donald Trump intends to fundamentally dismantle what has been characterized as the “woke” Department of Education. This announcement comes in response to alarming statistics indicating that math and reading proficiency among students has reached shocking lows.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a concerning 40% of fourth graders and 33% of eighth graders are reading below the basic level. Additionally, only 40% of fourth graders and 28% of eighth graders perform at a proficient or advanced level in math. These statistics represent a significant decline in our education system’s performance and have prompted urgent calls for reform.
Justice elaborated during her interview that governors attending a roundtable discussion with Trump expressed not only their dissatisfaction with the academic failures observed under the Education Department’s oversight but also their frustration with social justice issues affecting students. These issues include the introduction of social-emotional learning (SEL), diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and critical race theory (CRT) in classrooms.
During the discussion, governors emphasized the necessity for increased parental choice and state autonomy in educational matters. Justice stated, “They [governors] articulated that parents seek greater choice. On top of academic deficiencies, they pointed to a toxic mix of SEL, DEI, and CRT. The president has initiated executive actions to address these concerns, and the governors requested more authority to cater to their communities’ educational needs, thereby allowing parents to make informed decisions on behalf of their children.”
Justice also highlighted the detrimental influence that teachers’ unions have had on the U.S. education system, warning that they will likely oppose Trump’s efforts to dismantle the Education Department at every opportunity. She noted, “We face significant academic challenges, yet unions continue to profit from these failures in public education. Thankfully, we have President Trump advocating for parents’ rights in Washington D.C. For too long, moms and public school children have lacked representation, and we are grateful for his commitment to prioritizing children’s needs in America.”
In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, Trump has campaigned on the promise to abolish the Department of Education, sparking intense debate across the political spectrum. Opponents and supporters alike are weighing the potential benefits and drawbacks of such a significant overhaul of the nation’s educational framework.
As Trump makes a push to reshape the Education Department, both the public and policymakers are left to grapple with the implications of his proposals. Will dismantling the current system lead to improved educational outcomes? Or will it exacerbate existing issues within the country’s education landscape? As discussions and debates continue, the need for a cohesive strategy that prioritizes students remains an urgent priority.
