Cantu-Castle never envisioned a future in politics. Her focus had always been on her family and academic pursuits as a law student. “Watching these issues unfold from various branches of government was gut-wrenching,” she said. “I felt compelled to take action, but I didn’t know how.” Encouragement from friends and mentors helped her clarify her next steps. A crucial conversation with a mentor, Claudia, changed everything.
“Claudia told me I needed to run for office. I didn’t take it seriously at first, but her words resonated with me,” Cantu-Castle recalled. The encouragement burst into something larger; soon, another mentor urged her to consider her role as a state representative, igniting a sense of purpose within her.
Empathy at the Core
Cantu-Castle has embraced her identity as not just a candidate but also a community advocate. “I’m just a regular person, a mom, a law student. But I recognize that regular people can make a significant impact,” she stated. Her campaign is centered on the belief that everyone has the potential to serve their community effectively.
As she embarks on this journey, her message resonates with many in the Rio Grande Valley. “Here in the Valley, we work hard and raise families, yet our voices often go unheard by those in power,” Cantu-Castle emphasized. “Your vote matters. When people don’t act, they relinquish their power,” she asserted. The urgency of her message is clear: each citizen must participate in the democratic process to ensure their voices are heard. “Voting isn’t just a right; it’s our responsibility,” she expressed passionately.

Cantu-Castle attributes her drive to her faith, which she describes as foundational to her approach to public service. She believes in the principle that serving others is equivalent to serving God. “What I do for Angie is my service to her; it’s also to my community,” she said. In collaborating with organizations like The League of United Latin American Citizens, Cantu-Castle is advocating for essential services, including a long-awaited VA hospital that was approved in 2009 but has yet to be built. “The need for a VA hospital is urgent,” she noted. “The lack of services in our area has gone on for far too long.”

Even as her campaign gains momentum, Cantu-Castle remains grounded. She emphasizes that her strength is inherent in her community. “There’s nothing in me that isn’t already in you. I just chose to step up and fight for what’s right,” she said. Her belief in the collective potential of her community fuels her motivation.
