U.S. Applauds Paraguay’s Action Against Iran’s Terror Networks

The U.S. government is celebrating a significant move by Paraguay in the ongoing battle against terrorism. The decision to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization marks an important step in safeguarding global security.

On Thursday, the U.S. State Department released a statement commending Paraguayan President Santiago Peña for this pivotal action. This designation is seen as a damaging blow to Iran’s terror networks operating within the Western Hemisphere.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated, “The United States welcomes President Santiago Peña’s designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.” With this declaration, Paraguay joins a global effort to combat Iranian-sponsored terrorism.

Paraguay Expands Terror Designations

Alongside the IRGC designation, Paraguay expanded its 2019 designations of Hezbollah and Hamas. Previously, only the armed wings of these groups were classified as terrorist entities. Now, the entirety of both organizations has been recognized as threats, strengthening Paraguay’s position against Iranian-backed extremism.

Bruce expressed that Iran is a leading state sponsor of terrorism worldwide. She highlighted, “Iran has financed and directed numerous terrorist attacks and activities globally, through its IRGC-Qods Force and proxies such as Hezbollah and Hamas.” This focus underscores the urgency of the response from Paraguay.

Significance in the Tri-Border Area

The Tri-Border Area, where Paraguay meets Argentina and Brazil, has been identified as a key operational hub for Hezbollah. The U.S. State Department noted that Paraguay’s recent actions will significantly impair the Iranian regime’s ability to fund terrorism and maintain operations in Latin America.

Bruce emphasized the importance of the steps taken by Paraguay, stating that they will help to hinder the Iranian regime and its proxies from executing terrorist plans. The Tri-Border Area is particularly critical in these efforts, as it serves as a nexus for illicit activities.

Building on Existing Momentum

The Trump administration intends to leverage this momentum, collaborating with allies to confront Iran’s extensive influence across the globe. Bruce asserted, “The United States will continue to work with partners such as Paraguay to confront global security threats.” This call to action emphasizes the necessity for collective responsibility in holding the Iranian regime accountable.

This move is part of a broader longstanding strategy. Since his earlier presidency, President Trump has prioritized confronting Iran’s terror apparatus in U.S. foreign policy.

In 2018, President Trump famously withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known as the Iran nuclear deal. Two rounds of nuclear talks have already taken place this month, with another round scheduled for later this week.
