On Saturday, U.S. forces executed a lethal strike targeting a narcotics vessel operated by a designated terrorist organization in the Eastern Pacific. This operation resulted in the deaths of three suspected narco-terrorists while conducted in international waters, as reported by U.S. Southern Command.
This recent strike increases the total number of suspected narco-terrorists killed to 82, with three individuals reported as survivors. This ongoing campaign focuses on dismantling drug-smuggling vessels linked to terrorist networks.
In a statement on X, U.S. Southern Command confirmed that intelligence indicated the vessel struck during this operation was engaged in smuggling narcotics along a well-known trafficking route. The command referred to the action as a “lethal kinetic operation,” emphasizing its importance in disrupting transnational criminal networks.
On Thursday, the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, announced the initiation of Operation Southern Spear. This new mission aims to systematically target narco-terror networks operating throughout Latin America, reflecting the increasing urgency of national security concerns.
In his announcement on X, Hegseth stated that U.S. Southern Command, along with Joint Task Force Southern Spear, will spearhead this mission designed to defend U.S. soil and dismantle narco-terrorist groups across the Western Hemisphere. He emphasized, “This mission defends our Homeland, removes narco-terrorists from our Hemisphere, and secures our Homeland from the drugs that are killing our people.”
Last week marked the milestone of the U.S. carrying out its 20th strike against suspected drug-trafficking boats in recent months, resulting in the deaths of four alleged narco-terrorists according to a Pentagon official. These operations reflect an intensified focus on eradicating narcotics-related crime.
Since early September, U.S. forces have effectively targeted and destroyed numerous vessels involved in drug trafficking. Many of these boats are linked to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang and Colombia’s Ejército de Liberación Nacional, underlining the cross-border nature of the narcotics trade.
The operation commenced on September 2, when a strike killed 11 alleged members of Tren de Aragua. The efforts have continued into October and November, involving a series of targeted actions that have resulted in the elimination of many more operatives along established trafficking routes. This campaign underscores the ongoing commitment of U.S. forces to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
U.S. forces have targeted a range of vessels including submersibles, fishing boats, and high-speed crafts. One particularly controversial strike involved an ELN-affiliated craft that drew critical attention from Colombia’s president. Such operations demonstrate the complexities and difficulties of conducting counter-narcotics operations amid varying international perspectives.
These military actions predominantly took place near Venezuela’s coast and within the broader Eastern Pacific region, where the latest operations have been concentrated. The geographical focus highlights the significant involvement of South American countries in narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.
The Navy has announced that it will lead Operation Southern Spear under the U.S. 4th Fleet and Southern Command. This operation will incorporate advanced technology, utilizing long-dwell robotic surface vessels, small robotic interceptor boats, and vertical takeoff and landing robotic air vessels. Such innovations aim to enhance operational effectiveness and overall mission success.
The continued efforts of U.S. forces reflect a robust commitment to tackling the persistent challenges posed by narco-terrorism. Each operation is a vital step in ensuring the safety and security of not only the United States but also regional partners affected by the drug trade. The evolving nature of these engagements underscores the necessity for adaptive strategies in combating modern threats to national and international security.
This campaign against narco-terrorists remains a significant aspect of U.S. military operations, highlighting the intersection of defense, international relations, and public safety in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
