The North Carolina Tar Heels faced considerable criticism following the announcement of this year’s NCAA Tournament bracket. Many fans and analysts questioned whether the Tar Heels deserved one of the coveted spots in March Madness. However, after a dominant performance, the Tar Heels have silenced their detractors.
In a decisive ‘First Four’ game played on Tuesday night, the Tar Heels triumphed over the San Diego State Aztecs with a score of 95 to 68. This win secured a No. 11 seed for UNC in the highly competitive South Region, allowing them to advance and prepare for a matchup against No. 6 Ole Miss in the first round.
Despite being the last team selected for the NCAA Tournament, the Tar Heels proved their worth on the national stage by securing a spot in Dayton, Ohio. This matchup presented a challenge against the Aztecs, known for their formidable defensive strategy under head coach Brian Dutcher. Nonetheless, the Tar Heels defied expectations and demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the game.
From the opening tip-off, UNC showcased impressive offensive prowess, shooting an astounding 60.9 percent from the field during the first half. The team successfully netted 14 out of 23 attempts while almost effortlessly sinking seven of their nine three-point shots. Moreover, their perfect execution at the free-throw line, hitting all 12 attempts, propelled them to an impressive 47 points at halftime. RJ Davis capped off a dominant half with a three-pointer right as the buzzer sounded.
In stark contrast, the Aztecs struggled significantly offensively. With a dismal shooting percentage of just 26.7 percent in the first half and only four three-pointers out of 16 attempts, they limped to a mere 23 points. The resulting 24-point deficit proved insurmountable.
As the second half commenced, the Tar Heels continued so dominate on the floor. They outscored San Diego State 48-45, maintaining control of the game and sealing their victory comfortably. Their overall shooting performance was remarkable, ending the game with a 52.6 percent shooting rate from the field, which included 58.3 percent accuracy from beyond the arc, successfully landing 14 of 24 attempts. The free throw line yielded 21 points out of 24 attempts, solidifying their commanding performance.
R.J. Davis emerged as the standout player of the game, leading in scoring with 26 points. He shot an impressive 8-of-12 from the field and seamlessly sank six of his six three-point attempts. In addition to his scoring prowess, Davis contributed two assists, proving crucial in his team’s offensive strategy.
Jae’Lyn Withers also made a significant contribution, registering a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Furthermore, Seth Trimble provided a vital spark off the bench, adding 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Ven-Allen Lubin played a notable supporting role, contributing 12 points, eight of which resulted from his efforts at the free throw line.
In contrast, the San Diego State Aztecs never fully found their rhythm during the game. Although they managed to shoot 39.7 percent from the field, it fell short in the high-pressure environment of March Madness. Their inability to capitalize on offensive opportunities undoubtedly cost them in this matchup.
The Tar Heels’ impressive victory over a formidable opponent serves as a reminder of their potential in this tournament. With the momentum gained from this win, they look forward to taking on Ole Miss in the upcoming round. As March Madness continues, fans can expect thrilling matchups as teams vie for the ultimate prize.
As the tournament progresses, anticipation builds for how North Carolina will adapt to the challenges ahead. Can they continue their strong performance, or will they face stiffer competition? The world of college basketball awaits the next chapter of this exciting tournament.
