In response to security legislation enacted two decades ago, a growing number of Americans must update their driver’s licenses or identification cards to comply with REAL ID standards. Failure to do so will prevent individuals from boarding domestic flights within the United States.

As the deadline of May 7 approaches, some conservative voices have urged President Donald Trump to reconsider this requirement, arguing it infringes on civil liberties.

Phased Enforcement of REAL ID Begins Soon

Starting May 7, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration, will cease to accept driver’s licenses or ID cards lacking a star in the upper corner, indicating REAL ID compliance. To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must provide additional documents such as their Social Security numbers for verification.

Passengers lacking REAL ID verification on their licenses should consider alternatives such as a passport, passport card, military ID, a permanent resident card, or an enhanced driver’s license that some states offer.

TSA’s Approach to Compliance Enforcement

The TSA plans to initiate
