Recent revelations regarding the FBI, particularly the Arctic Frost scandal, have provided a stark reminder of the agency’s complex landscape. For those like me who have witnessed these developments from the inside, the unfolding events are not surprising. They affirm the concerns I explored in my book, “The Two FBIs: The Bravery and Betrayal I Saw in My Time at the Bureau,” published by Broadside Books. My recent meeting with President Donald Trump, who endorsed my work, underscored the relevance of these discussions.
With over a decade of service as an FBI special agent, I dedicated my career to safeguarding the American public. My journey began at the FBI Academy, leading to an assignment at the Miami Field Office where I engaged in white-collar crime investigations. Eventually, I transitioned to a nationally recognized violent crime fugitive task force. This role involved challenging investigations and demanding takedowns, which were both taxing and rewarding. Initially, I believed I was part of an organization committed to a noble mission, but that perception changed.
As time progressed, I witnessed a troubling evolution within the FBI. The agency began to show signs of political and social weaponization, leading to the perception of a schism—two distinct factions within the bureau. This transformation is troubling for both agents and the public they serve.
At the core of the FBI lies a profound commitment to integrity, which I found to be integral to my identity as an agent. Honesty in law enforcement is crucial. Speaking out against practices that contradict fundamental principles can often lead to personal risk. I observed many capable agents grappling with the choice between truth and convenient narratives, frequently opting for the latter.
FBI 1 comprises dedicated agents who aspire to uphold the Constitution and prioritize the needs of victims. These professionals labor diligently without seeking recognition, focusing on genuine public service. In stark contrast, FBI 2 embodies those who misuse their positions for self-serving agendas. They often occupy influential roles, leveraging their power for personal gain rather than protecting the public trust.
This internal division is not confined to isolated incidents; it permeates the FBI from the top down. The mindset of FBI 2 reveals a troubling blend of arrogance and apathy, leading to actions that have tarnished the bureau’s once-stellar reputation. The dichotomy raises critical questions about the future of federal law enforcement in America.
One might argue that the FBI is embroiled in a civil war, a battle between two philosophies. On one side stands a commitment to accountability and effective crime prevention. On the opposite end lies a dangerous inclination towards politicization and performative justice, overshadowing the agency’s primary mission of law enforcement.
Recent changes within the bureau highlight a troubling shift. With a renewed focus on personal agendas, the prioritization of serious crime investigations has waned, leading to troubling implications for community safety and justice. This shift not only risks the integrity of the Bureau but also the safety of citizens nationwide.
Choosing to leave the FBI was not an easy decision. After two years of serving under the Biden administration, I found myself confronted with a choice: to sacrifice my values or to leave an organization that no longer aligned with my principles. In October 2022, I decided to step away, driven by the belief that fulfilling one’s calling often means making difficult choices.
Following the path laid out by one’s convictions can lead to isolation, but it holds inherent value. Trusting in these guiding principles ultimately fostered the courage to make a significant change in my life. Sadly, the circumstances that compelled my departure also underscored a disturbing reality: many others, like me, have chosen to walk away from an institution they once revered.
Tragic events have underscored this decline, including the devastating loss of two agents during operations aimed at child predator arrests. One of them was my close friend, a dedicated and exceptional agent whose legacy deserves more recognition than the FBI currently offers.
The complexities and challenges within the FBI continue, but I remain hopeful for the future of law enforcement in America. The notion that FBI 1 could emerge in a renewed capacity, while FBI 2 faces necessary reckoning, offers a glimmer of optimism for a department seeking to restore its reputation.
I chose to share my experiences to shed light on the realities faced within the FBI. Ultimately, I believe that good will prevail. My intention is to make a contribution towards fostering a robust and ethical agency that protects and serves the American people.
As we reflect on these issues, it becomes apparent that a united front is essential. Abiding by the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln, a house divided against itself cannot stand. The dualities within the FBI call for a reevaluation of priorities, aiming for a unified agency committed to safeguarding the principles of justice and integrity.
This narrative, rooted in my personal journey within the Bureau, serves to provoke thought and discussion about its future. The time has come for FBI leadership to critically examine its internal dynamics. Together, we can aspire to elevate the agency to meet the challenges ahead, ensuring that the FBI fulfills its foundational role in maintaining law and order.
This article encapsulates the insights and experiences detailed in my book, “The Two FBIs.” It aims to contribute to an ongoing conversation about the future of the FBI and its mission.
