Understanding the ‘MAGA Leftist’: Insights from Columnist Batya Ungar-Sargon on Trump’s Diverse Support Base

Exploring Trump’s Comeback through Unique Voter Perspectives

President Donald Trump’s impressive resurgence in the 2024 election has left many observers surprised. However, a columnist asserts that Trump’s backing from a significant and often overlooked demographic played a crucial role in his success. This writer, Batya Ungar-Sargon, identifies herself as part of this group.

Ungar-Sargon, a columnist for The Free Press and author of Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America’s Working Men and Women, recently engaged in a widely circulated discussion with Bill Maher. During a recent episode of his HBO show Real Time, Maher confronted her regarding her support for Trump.

Curiously, he labeled her a “conservative Republican,” a classification Ungar-Sargon strongly rejected.

“I was never a Republican or a conservative,” she explained. “I was a leftist, and I’m still a leftist. Now, I’m a MAGA leftist because—”

Maher, confused, interjected, “That makes no sense.” Despite his skepticism, Ungar-Sargon believes her identification resonates with many.

Since her appearance on Maher’s show, Ungar-Sargon reports receiving an overwhelming number of messages from people who relate to her perspective. “Thousands of people reached out to say, ‘I am just like you. Thank you for articulating my experience.’ These individuals played a vital role in Trump’s success,” she remarked. She emphasized that Trump’s victory relied not solely on traditional Republican voters but also on those who felt disenfranchised by the Democratic Party.

Ungar-Sargon describes “MAGA leftists” as individuals who endorse the labor left and believe the working class forms the foundation of society. She emphasized that achieving a middle-class lifestyle is essential for maintaining a stable democracy.

“To me, that’s the essence of ‘left,’ along with being anti-war and advocating for free speech—all issues that have now become central to MAGA ideology,” she stated.

Shifting Perspectives on Political Identity

As an independent journalist, Ungar-Sargon explores her transformative experience. While she acknowledges once participating in the “woke left” with intense disdain for Trump, her views have evolved.

Reflecting humorously on her past, she acknowledged her strong aversion to Trump in 2015. “I hated him. After his victory in 2016, I even avoided my favorite bar because locals supported him,” she shared with a chuckle. “I had the derangement bad, and I’m embarrassed to admit it.”

The catalyst for her change in perspective primarily stemmed from a 2018 study from Yale University. The research revealed that White liberals often adjusted their speech when communicating with people of color, unlike their White conservative counterparts.

“Reading that study shook me, as it illuminated not only my surroundings but my entire worldview. It demonstrated a troubling dynamic, rooted in the belief that minorities require our assistance,” she recalled. “This realization forced me to grapple with the implications of my beliefs, which felt more like an indictment of my ideology.”

After three months of reflection, she returned to her contemplation. “I asked myself what it meant if I was wrong about this. What other assumptions might I need to reevaluate?”

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Political Allegiances

Ungar-Sargon viewed the 2020 election as uncertain, ultimately siding with Joe Biden. However, her perceptions shifted following her experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She observed how misinformation regarding the virus, coupled with detrimental lockdowns and vaccine mandates, harmed the working class. This disillusionment with the Democratic Party heightened her awareness of Trump’s reshaping of the Republican Party.

Trump, she noted, cultivated a coalition that transcended traditional party lines. He attracted both socially conservative and socially progressive voters, demonstrating his political acumen. “His genius lies in recognizing the Republican Party’s misalignment with the average American’s views,” she asserted.

This insight allowed Trump to resonate with a broader audience, recognizing that many Americans identify as socially moderate, supporting same-sex marriage and advocating for exceptions regarding abortion.

Understanding the Shift in Political Unity

Ungar-Sargon’s research while writing her book Second Class has deepened her understanding of working-class sentiments. She encountered many individuals praising Trump’s economic policies.

As she spoke with them, she noted a collective recognition that Trump’s protectionist approach, especially regarding trade, had improved their circumstances. “Many individuals conveyed how his policies revived their hopes for achieving the American dream,” she said.

This perspective contrasts with the elite’s portrayal of Trump as divisive. “Beyond the elite circle, he is perceived as a unifying figure. His agenda resonates with average Americans who feel neglected by traditional parties,” she concluded.

The Welcoming Nature of the MAGA Movement

Through her political journey, Ungar-Sargon felt embraced by the MAGA movement, where supporters welcomed her, stating, “I don’t agree with everything you say, but you’re still part of our movement.”

This differs sharply from her experiences within progressive circles, which she described as unforgiving. “On the left, even the slightest disagreement can lead to exclusion,” she explained.

Unlike the more restrictive environment she encountered among progressives, MAGA represents a diverse coalition. Ungar-Sargon highlighted this inclusivity, noting that individuals with varying ideologies regarding sensitive topics like abortion can coexist within the movement.

Voting for Trump: A Choice without Regret

In the upcoming 2024 election, Ungar-Sargon plans to vote for Trump without hesitation. While engaging with Maher on his show, she expressed her confidence in her decision.

“I feel the exact opposite of regret,” she said firmly, when Maher questioned whether she feels uneasy about her support.

She commended Maher for seeking to understand her perspective and acknowledged that economic disparities may explain the ideological divide. “For the progressive elite class, many decisions motivated by economic gain clash with the interests of working-class Americans. However, people like Trump advocate for those often overlooked,” she asserted.

Ungar-Sargon’s experiences represent a profound shift in understanding political identity and the evolving landscape of American politics. Her insights challenge preconceived notions about voter alignment, emphasizing the importance of recognizing diverse perspectives within political movements.

A New Era of Political Engagement

As the political landscape continues to shift, understanding voices like Ungar-Sargon’s offers a window into the complexities of voter motivations and alliances. The evolving dynamics surrounding Trump’s coalition illustrates a potential for unique collaborations among individuals across the political spectrum, redefining the traditional boundaries of American politics.
