A couple from Michigan experienced a surprise delivery that took place in the parking lot of a McDonald’s. Their baby girl arrived earlier than expected, leading to a playful and endearing nickname that has captured public attention.
Alyce Rotunda, age 32, anticipated the arrival of her fourth child in late August. After experiencing a false alarm earlier this month, the couple found themselves in an unexpected scenario just days later on Alyce’s birthday. As contractions intensified, the couple knew it was time to head to the hospital in Kalamazoo, which is located a 45-minute drive from their home in Centreville.
That late evening, Alyce called her mother to watch her three children: Genesis, 7, Kevin III, 4, and Boone, 2. She and her husband, Kevin, began their journey to the hospital, hoping to arrive in time for the delivery.
“If I had to have the baby in the car, then that’s what I was going to do,” Rotunda shared, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
As they drove, the couple communicated with a 911 dispatcher, explaining their situation. Although they aimed for a nearby gas station, they opted to continue further when they realized the station was busy and well-lit, which could pose complications for an emergency delivery. Instead, they headed to a closed McDonald’s in Schoolcraft, seeking a quieter spot.
“The pain makes you focused on what’s happening, and I only had a slight moment of thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, can I do this?’ as we were pulling into McDonald’s,” Alyce reflected on the intense moments leading up to the birth.
“You just do what you have to do. There’s no sense in fighting anything,” she recalled, citing the adrenaline and determination to give birth as key factors in their decision-making.
In a surprising display of courage, even Kevin, who usually feels queasy at the sight of blood, stepped up to assist in the delivery. “Anyone who knows my husband knows that if you talk about a nosebleed for too long, he gets nauseous. So for him to go from that to catching his own child, I am so thankful,” Alyce said.
Once their baby girl arrived and let out her first cry, a profound sense of relief washed over Alyce. She noted that both she and the baby were healthy, which was especially important given her previous high-risk pregnancies and her condition with Type 1 diabetes.
Paramedics arrived approximately ten minutes after the birth, ensuring that both Alyce and Matilda received the medical care they needed. Alyce expressed gratitude that the experience, albeit wild, ended without complications for either of them.
Reflecting on the unusual circumstances surrounding Matilda’s birth, she noted, “I wanted her on my birthday, but she decided to wait three hours, and she gave me a story regardless.”
As news of Matilda’s memorable entrance spread, so did her unique nickname. Her brother-in-law was the one who coined the term “McTilly,” a playful combination of her given name and the iconic fast-food brand. “He was talking to my husband about nicknames, and he just thought it was the best thing ever,” Rotunda said, smiling at the joy it has brought to their family and friends.
Locals have also embraced the story. The Schoolcraft McDonald’s even shared a celebratory post on their Facebook, commemorating the unique occasion. The post read, “Alyce and Kevin Rotunda got more than they ordered in the parking lot at the Schoolcraft McDonald’s. During the early morning hours of August 11, they welcomed their beautiful baby girl, Matilda, under the Golden Arches!”
The fast-food giant’s message concluded with, “Alyce and Kevin, we’re glad to know you’ll have a story to tell for years to come. And as for baby Matilda? She’s already part of the McFamily!”
The heartwarming story has resonated with many, sparking laughter and smiles. It serves as a reminder of life’s unpredictable moments, highlighting how joy can emerge even from unexpected situations. Families in the community expressed their excitement, and social media users have shared the story, helping to further connect the Rotundas with their surroundings.
The couple has received an outpouring of well-wishes from the community, showcasing the bond that such an extraordinary event can create. Pregnant couples and parents have particularly shared their own remarkable childbirth stories, reflecting on the often unpredictable nature of bringing a new life into the world.
As Matilda grows, her family seems ready for whatever surprises life has in store for them next, adding an extra level of joy to their already memorable journey.
Combining humor and affection, the story of Alyce, Kevin, and little Matilda serves as a testament to love and family. Despite the chaos and unpredictability of childbirth, their unforgettable experience at McDonald’s has created a cherished memory. For the Rotundas, this extraordinary chapter in their family’s story is one they will undoubtedly cherish forever, as it blends the joy of welcoming a new baby with the laughter of an unordinary yet heartwarming situation.
