The University of Alabama’s senior and Zeta Tau Alpha member Kylan Darnell has declared a temporary withdrawal from recruitment activities and social media postings related to the sorority rush phenomenon captivating campuses across the nation.
Darnell, who holds the title of Miss Ohio Teen USA, has spent the last three years documenting her experiences within the world of sororities. This year, however, she has chosen a different path.
In a candid TikTok video, Darnell expressed her decision, stating, “I just wanted to come on here because I am somebody that has painted my whole college life, my whole sorority life online. There’s been good and bad. But today, I’m not all dressed up for recruitment. I’ve personally decided to take a mental health day for the next three days.”
Originally from Ohio, Darnell arrived at the University of Alabama without a firm grasp of the traditions and intricacies involved in the Southern rush experience.
Reflecting on her journey, she mentioned, “I had no idea my life would turn into what it has. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to post on social media. I didn’t know it was frowned upon. I had no idea about the backlash, or the positivity, that would come with it.”
Brandis Bradley, a sorority coach, described the recruitment process as akin to psychological warfare. In an interview, she stated, “It’s emotional boot camp, and their frontal lobes aren’t even fully developed.”
Darnell’s initial encounter with Greek life occurred when her mother introduced her to Sorority Row prior to her freshman year. “I was hooked,” she recalled, despite her parents’ initial reservations.
On the first day of recruitment, Darnell captured a short TikTok explaining the process and shared it with her family group chat. This innocent clip quickly went viral, positioning her as a prominent figure within the sorority rush narrative.
Since then, Darnell has gained a substantial following, accumulating 1.2 million loyal followers alongside 82.7 million likes for her content, which ranges from philanthropy events to sisterhood bonding moments.
While she described her journey as enjoyable, Darnell acknowledged the difficulties that accompany such visibility. “It’s also been really hard to navigate college while being under a microscope,” she shared in a previous interview. Many fail to recognize that sorority members are real people with genuine experiences.
The scrutiny and pressures have only intensified over time. Darnell remarked that this year’s rush feels significantly more intense, advising followers against tagging her in posts about other girls. She asserted that doing so only fans the flames of unnecessary drama.
Darnell underscored that her retreat from recruitment is not meant to deter others from participating in rush events. Instead, she aims to safeguard her well-being in the process.
“I was somebody that my freshman through junior year, I lived for my sorority. I loved my sorority. I loved waking up and showing you guys the sides of it, what we would do, the activities, the sisterhood, the philanthropy. It was so much fun to me,” Darnell reflected.
She emphasized, however, that her perspective has shifted, stating, “There was a point in my life that my personality was sorority, but I’ve grown, and it’s not really like that anymore.”
Darnell’s intention to take a step back stems from her ongoing struggle with mental health during this turbulent period. She shared her feelings, stating, “If I was to post this year and promote it, then I would be doing those girls an injustice.”
While she still values the sorority experience and expresses her support for potential new members, she confided, “I’m just saying that I’m in a mental health spot where I’ve been struggling. I can’t go online this year, and I won’t lie to you guys about it. I’ve just not been enjoying it. I’ve not been having fun.”
Darnell received an outpouring of support in response to her announcement. Followers and fans praised her integrity and underscored the importance of choosing self-care over societal expectations. Comments included affirmations like, “Always choose you and what’s best for you. Your TikTok fam has your back!”
While remaining an active sorority member, Darnell committed to stepping away from online engagement and assisting her younger sister during recruitment. “My family’s here, my friends are here, and I’m gonna help my little sister go through recruitment because I can already tell it’s gonna be really hard for her,” she noted.
Darnell stressed the necessity for this break, stating, “I just need a break because I can’t lie to myself anymore this week because I’m really struggling with it. Anyway, I love you all.”
As thousands of hopeful new members gear up for Bid Day scheduled for August 17, Darnell will be observing from the sidelines, consciously prioritizing her peace rather than performance. This pause reflects not only her commitment to self-care but also serves as a reminder of the often-overlooked personal struggles faced by individuals in the spotlight.
