The University of Washington is currently facing an investigation initiated by the Trump administration regarding a recent protest that escalated into chaos. The Monday protest saw students occupy an engineering building on the campus and ignite dumpsters, leading to police intervention and the arrest of 30 individuals.
The Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, established by President Donald Trump in February, has stepped in to assess what they describe as a surge in anti-Semitic harassment and violence at the Seattle campus. While the task force acknowledged the university’s prompt response and their strong statement condemning the protesters’ actions, it urged the institution to enhance efforts to deter such future violent incidents.
This task force emphasizes the university’s responsibility to create a secure and welcoming environment for Jewish students. It anticipates that the University of Washington will implement additional enforcement measures and policy reforms to ensure similar disturbances do not recur.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon commented on the matter, labeling the actions of the protesters as “destructive behavior.”
In her statement, McMahon condemned the violence and upheaval experienced on the University of Washington campus as another alarming instance of antisemitic harassment that has emerged in several elite institutions across the nation. She firmly stated that the Task Force would not permit such disruptors to interfere with campus life or infringe on the rights of students, particularly Jewish students who may feel threatened in their educational environment.
The occupation lasted several hours, during which protesters demanded that the university divest from Boeing, a notable aerospace and defense contractor with historical ties to the institution. Footage from the protest showed dumpsters ablaze as law enforcement sought to regain control of the occupied building.
Demonstrators, many of whom concealed their identities, obstructed access to multiple streets surrounding the building and prevented entrances and exits, according to the university report.
The student group known as Students United for Palestinian Equality & Return played a pivotal role in orchestrating the protest. This organization asserted that Boeing significantly funded the building, contributing $10 million in 2022.
The group accused the university of complicity, alleging that it serves as a direct partner in what they describe as the genocide of the Palestinian people due to its relationship with Boeing. They highlighted Boeing’s role in manufacturing military equipment used by Israel against Palestinians, claiming such actions lead to the destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and the loss of innocent lives.
In response to the chaos, UW President Ana Mari Cauce strongly condemned the activists, labeling the protest an unlawful occupation that did not align with peaceful demonstrations.
Cauce also addressed the group’s response to the recent Hamas attacks on civilians, expressing disapproval of their celebratory remarks following the violence.
She declared that the university would not be intimidated by destructive behaviors and that dialogue would not occur with groups endorsing such tactics. The administration remains committed to opposing antisemitism, racism, and all forms of bias to ensure a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus.
The Task Force is currently investigating over 60 universities for failing to adequately address issues of antisemitism. Many of these investigations have resulted in significant funding reductions for institutions such as Harvard, Brown, Cornell, Northwestern, Columbia, Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. stated that no university tolerating violence, harassment, or open intimidation of Jewish students should anticipate continued financial support from taxpayers. He stressed that this issue transcends political boundaries; it revolves around ensuring that federally funded universities adhere to laws protecting civil rights while promoting a secure environment for all students.
Following the occupation, protesters displayed a banner renaming the building to honor Sha’ban Al-Dalou, a 19-year-old Palestinian who lost his life during a bombing incident at the Al-Aqsa Hospital on October 14, 2024. The Israeli government maintains that the action targeted a Hamas command center located within the hospital.
Looking ahead, the organization plans to stage another protest on Thursday at 1 p.m. local time, gathering in front of Gerberding Hall to demonstrate support for those taken into custody during the initial protests.
