At an impressive 92 years old, Ivan Pedley demonstrates that age is merely a number when it comes to living a long, healthy, and active life. This retired toolmaker still competes in an activity that has been a passion of his for nearly eight decades: ping-pong.

Pedley not only plays but actively teaches others about the benefits of engaging in physical activities. He plays ping-pong twice a week and expresses no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

A Lifelong Passion for Ping-Pong

Ivan first picked up a ping-pong paddle at the age of 14. Now, nearly 78 years later, he shows no signs of stopping. At the Great Wyrley Table Tennis Club located in Staffordshire, West Midlands, England, Pedley plays around 14 matches each week.

Competing against players often decades his junior, Pedley remains a formidable opponent. Despite acknowledging that he has slowed with age, he believes that success in the sport can be attributed to skillful technique rather than sheer speed.

The Health Benefits of Active Living

Regular participation in ping-pong not only helps Pedley maintain physical fitness but also contributes to his overall well-being. He enthusiastically claims, “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done!” Living in Walsall, West Midlands, he relishes every moment spent on the table. Pedley emphasizes the importance of staying active, stating, “Sitting on your backside is no help to anyone.”

As a senior player, he finds joy in competing with younger opponents while continually learning from them. He notes that many players in their sixties also frequent the club, but he often challenges himself by playing against younger competitors. “I try to play everybody at the club,” he says, highlighting his openness and enthusiasm.

Despite his extensive experience, he humorously claims, “I do let them win sometimes, though, because I don’t want to dishearten them.” Such camaraderie exemplifies his belief in mutual respect and encouragement in sports.

Every Tuesday and Friday, Pedley dedicates up to three hours to honing his skills and enjoying the sport. His motivation stems from a desire to remain active and healthy.
