Many people seek wisdom and guidance in the Bible during moments of joy and struggle. Interestingly, experts suggest that this ancient text may also offer insights into achieving optimal physical health.
Dr. Josh Axe and Jordan Rubin, co-authors of the book titled ‘The Biblio Diet,’ argue that the ancient foods mentioned in the Bible can form the basis of a modern dietary plan. This approach aims to enhance well-being and even reverse debilitating health conditions.
‘I believe the Bible is the greatest health book ever written,’ Dr. Axe, a practitioner of natural medicine from Tennessee, shared in an interview. He emphasized that for anyone facing health challenges—be they depression, anxiety, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or conditions like PCOS or infertility—there exists a solution within the text. Following a diet inspired by the Bible can lead to renewal and wellness.
Both Axe and Rubin have faced significant health hurdles that deepened their commitment to their work. Rubin, for instance, was diagnosed with Crohn’s colitis during his teenage years and later with severe cancer.
After visiting numerous doctors without success, Rubin encountered someone who suggested that adhering to a Bible-based diet—proven through history and science—could lead to healing.
‘Following a 40-day dietary overhaul, combined with detoxification and spiritual therapy, I overcame what was labeled terminal cancer without undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or additional surgeries,’ Rubin told us.
Dr. Axe’s journey began as he helped his mother navigate breast cancer. He designed a nutrition plan that incorporated specific foods from the Bible like pomegranate and olive oil, alongside methods of prayer and faith.
Later, a medical procedure resulted in a spinal infection for Axe. Again, he turned to a Bible-based diet and prayer, which he integrated with regenerative treatments for his recovery.
‘I followed the guidance of the great physician, not just my ordinary physician,’ he explained. This conviction allowed him to foster hope and belief in miracles, leading to his complete healing.
The Bible frequently mentions food, and both authors assert that the foundational foods discussed can shape a nutritious contemporary diet.
Highlighted foods include red meat, whole-grain sourdough bread, olive oil, dairy products, fruits like pomegranates and figs, and natural sweeteners such as raw local honey.
Red meat is described as a ‘superfood’ that provides essential nutrients like protein, creatine, glutamine, carnitine, zinc, iron, and vitamin B6. Rubin noted that biblical figures consumed red meat whenever they could afford it, suggesting its value in sustaining health.
Bread, often vilified in modern dietary discussions, can play a significant role when prepared correctly. Rubin advised that ‘properly sourced and prepared grains can be a part of a healthy diet.’ He emphasized that considering Jesus’ title as the bread of life, bread should not universally be deemed harmful. The manner of processing and preserving it is critical.
Olive oil, rich in benefits for skin and cardiovascular health, frequently appears in scripture. Dairy, especially from sheep, goats, or specific cows, is also recognized as potentially beneficial.
Additionally, raw local honey serves as a natural sweetener and immune enhancer, while unrefined salt contributes vital minerals. Fruits like avocados and figs add to the dietary essentials.
‘Consume foods that God created in forms that are healthy for the body,’ Rubin advised. This notion conveys that even inherently healthy foods can become harmful when improperly cultivated and processed.
Rubin and Axe argue against consuming foods categorized as ‘unclean’ according to Leviticus, including pork, shellfish, and shrimp. ‘These animals do not process toxins effectively,’ Rubin explained.
Furthermore, they caution against modern processed foods rich in harmful ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup and artificial food dyes. Even seemingly healthy options can become detrimental when subjected to excessive processing.

‘Fasting is one of the most significant breakthroughs in healing,’ Dr. Axe asserted. This practice can begin by simply avoiding food for a 10-hour period overnight, allowing the body time to repair damaged or unhealthy cells.
He remarked on the extensive medical literature supporting fasting as a powerful tool for combating aging and promoting longevity.
Fasting may also lead to spiritual clarity. ‘I have personally experienced that spiritual growth provides a more profound connection to God and enhances my ability to perceive His voice,’ Dr. Axe shared.
