When President Donald Trump appointed me to lead the Department of Justice Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, I embraced the opportunity with deep gratitude. This task is personal to me, shaped by 35 years in civil rights law and a profound respect for the Jewish community.
My journey began with the support of Jewish friends who provided me with office space as I launched my career. Growing up in the 1960s, I witnessed the vital alliance between Black and Jewish Americans, where brave Jewish activists stood alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I cannot forget the tragic stories of Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, two young Jewish men who lost their lives in Mississippi while advocating for civil rights.
This shared history underscores the intertwined struggles of Black and Jewish Americans. Standing against one form of hate compels us to confront all forms. Antisemitism transcends identity; it is a challenge for all Americans. As a proud Black man leading this task force, I recognize my role in this crucial mission.
Over the past four years, the previous administration ignored the alarming rise of antisemitism across the United States, leaving Jewish Americans vulnerable to increasing threats. In sharp contrast, the current administration prioritizes the fight against this form of hatred.
Our task force has concentrated its efforts on the most prominent breeding grounds for antisemitism, notably American universities. Sadly, many institutions not only tolerate antisemitic behavior but may even protect it.
We have pinpointed several universities, including Harvard, Columbia, UCLA, and Northwestern, as places where antisemitic conduct has flourished. To address this issue, we have implemented federal funding freezes totaling billions of dollars, compelling these institutions to recognize their complicity and immediately adopt reforms. Funding from the federal government is a privilege that should not support discrimination against any group, including Jewish students, who deserve a safe educational environment.
The battle against antisemitism extends into the streets of America. Disturbing incidents, such as the brutal murder of two young staff members of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., serve as stark reminders of the severity of this issue. Instead of building their future, they were tragically gunned down.
In Colorado, a Holocaust survivor was killed, while others sustained severe injuries during an attack. Similarly, in St. Louis, arsonists targeted the vehicles of a family with ties to the Israeli Defense Forces, and hateful graffiti marred the community, inciting further division.
Our task force, along with the entire Department of Justice, is dedicated to ensuring that perpetrators of antisemitic violence face immediate and severe consequences. We will pursue justice for victims without hesitation.
Antisemitism also manifests economically. Jewish communities are often forced to incur substantial security costs that other groups do not face. Recently, I spoke at the Israel on Campus Coalition’s National Leadership Summit, where I revealed shocking figures about security expenses borne by students.
These students were charged over $228,000 for security measures to ensure their safety, a reality stemming from the city’s failure to provide necessary protections—a burden they should never have to shoulder. This so-called ‘Jewish tax’ contradicts our commitment to equal rights and dignity for all.
My task force is committed to advocating for legislative changes that require government officials, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, to take these matters seriously and act to protect Jewish students and institutions.
The urgent need for effective measures to combat antisemitism cannot be overstated. We must establish enduring safeguards to ensure Jewish Americans are protected regardless of changes in the presidential administration.
This mission transcends mere duty for me. It represents a relentless commitment to honor the civil rights legends of the past, defend current victims of hate, and foster a future where Jewish Americans can live without fear in their own country.
The forces fueling antisemitism, including Hamas and other extremist groups, have made it clear that their animosity extends beyond Jews. Their ultimate goal is to undermine American freedoms and values. Therefore, engaging in this fight is not just a moral obligation, it is crucial for the safety and survival of all Americans.
To genuinely combat antisemitism, it is imperative that we all work together. We must unify against hate and ensure that every citizen can live freely and securely. A robust response is necessary—not just from the government, but from communities and individuals nationwide. Let us stand together to protect our shared values and our diverse nation.
