Urgent Call to Action: The Rising Tide of Violence Against Christians and Druze in Syria

Recent reports from Syria reveal alarming acts of violence against vulnerable communities, particularly targeting Christians and Druze. These atrocities, allegedly carried out by groups connected to the Islamist regime, raise critical concerns about the trajectory of governance in the country. The interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, once known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has emerged as a controversial figure, previously on the FBI’s Most Wanted List due to his involvement in regional Sunni Islamist terrorism.

As someone with Syrian-American roots, I find it increasingly difficult to witness the plight of my ancestral homeland. My role as a physician heightens my urgency to address the severe human suffering reflected in the headlines. For years, I have sounded the alarm regarding the imminent threats posed by Islamist ideologies. Today, I emphasize the necessity of confronting the rise of a new tyranny in Syria, cloaked in religious rhetoric yet as perilous as its predecessors. Understanding the early signs of this emerging authoritarianism, following over five decades of Ba’athist military dictatorship, cannot be overstated.

Unfortunately, the world has become numb to the ongoing suffering in Syria. Since the Assad regime initiated its brutal crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011, the nation has been synonymous with devastation, dislocation, and despair. With over 500,000 lives lost and more than 13 million individuals displaced, cities like Aleppo, once vibrant and historic, are now reduced to ruins. Amidst this chaos, a new breed of authoritarianism is taking root, driven not by secular governance but by religious supremacy.

Reports indicate a disturbing surge in sectarian violence aimed at Syria’s religious minorities, especially Christians and Druze. These communities, steeped in centuries of history, stand resilient against waves of persecution. Regrettably, they face renewed threats from factions loyal to the new regime, which adheres to a radical interpretation of Sunni Islam. Such groups view theological diversity not as a testament to pluralism but as a crime punishable by death.

This escalating violence is an egregious distortion of Islam. It belongs not to Islam but to Islamism, a doctrinal perspective that envisions a rigid, theocratic model of governance. Islamism seeks to impose sharia law as the definitive authority in all aspects of life, disparaging individual liberties that are supposed to stem from divine guidance. Proponents of Islamism equate political power with a divine mandate, viewing opposition as tantamount to heresy. Thus, this ideology represents not faith but a form of fascism, veiled in religious language.

For years, Islamist factions have falsely positioned themselves as liberators from Assad’s tyranny, claiming to champion freedom, justice, and democracy. However, the current regime exhibits no fundamental difference from that of Assad. While their rhetoric may differ, their overarching objectives remain unchanged: total dominion accomplished through intimidation, violence, and societal repression.

Where Assad employed torture and chemical weaponry, the Islamists now wield a cult-like religious identity as both weapon and shield. Assad sowed sectarian discord to suppress dissent; today, Islamists perpetuate division under the guise of championing their version of truth.

The consequences remain dire: streets filled with bodies, families fractured, and a future devoid of liberty.

The Fundamental Importance of Religious Freedom

At the core of the struggle lies a principle cherished in America and increasingly thwarted worldwide: religious freedom. This right is not merely one among many; it is foundational to all liberties. When religious liberty flourishes, societies thrive. Conversely, its suppression invites a cascade of further rights violations.

This is not mere theoretical discourse. It reflects the lived experiences of millions. When people are denied the freedom to worship—or to choose not to believe—based on their conscience, they inevitably face restrictions on their ability to express themselves, gather, vote, and live without fear. Syria illustrates the catastrophic consequences that follow the erosion of religious liberty at the hands of ideological authoritarianism, secular or theocratic.

Building Alliances for Freedom

At the CLARITy Coalition, we strive to illuminate the threats posed by both political Islam and authoritarian regimes. Our network includes Muslims, ex-Muslims, and allies across the ideological spectrum united by the belief that liberty transcends regional values. We advocate for the dignity of every person, equality under the law, and the fundamental truth that no authority can dictate individual beliefs.

We urge the international community to take decisive action following the reported atrocities in Syria rather than merely issuing condemnations. This involves demanding thorough investigations into the ongoing massacres. Accountability for the Damascus government is essential, alongside transparency regarding its treatment of minorities.

Disengagement from any regime that perpetrates or facilitates such crimes is imperative. Recognizing Islamism for the extremist political ideology it represents is crucial; it should not be misconstrued as a legitimate religious expression.

In 2013, the Obama administration inadvertently supported the rise of an Islamist regime in Egypt, placating the Muslim Brotherhood, which paved the way for a return to military governance under Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. Syria’s rich religious diversity serves as a potential bulwark against authoritarianism’s dual fascism.

To build a future free from sectarianism and violence, it is vital to stand in solidarity with the Syrian populace, including Christians, Druze, Sunnis, Shi’a, Alawites, Kurds, and even atheists, all of whom wish to inhabit a nation that allows for peace, freedom of worship, and open discourse without fear of reprisal.

Immediate action from President Donald Trump is necessary. He should demand accountability from Damascus regarding Sharaa’s government and its treatment of religious minorities.

The Syrian people deserve more than a binary choice between Assad and al-Golani. They deserve a future grounded in liberty and dignity, free from the shackles of sectarian violence.

Once before, the world shielded its eyes from Syria, ignoring its suffering. The ramifications were devastating. We cannot afford to repeat that mistake.
