The U.S. Marshals Service has joined local law enforcement in the manhunt for a 24-year-old North Carolina man, Dominic Liam Connelly, accused of multiple serious offenses including the murder of his grandmother, arson, and assaulting a deputy.
Connelly was last spotted in Vanceboro, North Carolina, and authorities indicate that he has connections to New York. He is currently considered armed and dangerous, prompting heightened concerns in the community.
His grandmother, 72-year-old Patricia Jean Timek Lopedote, was discovered deceased in the debris of her home, which burned to the ground in Craven County. The discovery was made by authorities responding to the house fire on October 25.
Connelly is facing numerous charges including murder, arson, motor vehicle theft, attempted murder, and felony assault. His criminal history indicates previous run-ins with the law, including charges from 2017 related to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and probation violations.
In his recent interactions with law enforcement, he allegedly stabbed a deputy on October 29 in Vanceboro. Fortunately, the deputy survived the attack; however, Connelly managed to escape.
Authorities describe Connelly as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing around 180 pounds, with wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. On October 31, he appeared in a trail camera image near 10000 U.S. Highway 17. At that time, he was dressed in a black long-sleeve shirt and camouflage pants and appeared to be carrying a bag.
A more recent sighting on November 4 was captured by a homeowner’s Ring camera, showing Connelly again, but this time in tan clothing and carrying a backpack, a blanket, and a one-gallon jug. Sheriff Chip Hughes confirmed that the rapid sharing of this video is crucial, emphasizing that every moment of delay allows the suspect more opportunities to evade capture.
The ongoing search for Connelly has significantly impacted the local community. Schools have transitioned to remote classes, and local Halloween events have been rescheduled to ensure public safety.
In an interview, Sheriff Hughes acknowledged the possibility that Connelly may have individuals assisting him, potentially providing food, clothing, or shelter due to his family ties in the area. Community members are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
Authorities encourage anyone who sees Connelly to contact 911 immediately. If individuals have information that could aid in the investigation, they can reach out to the U.S. Marshals at 1-877-WANTED2. The cooperation of the public is vital in ensuring safety and bringing the suspect to justice.
Patricia Lopedote, a resident of Havelock, is remembered fondly by those who knew her. An online obituary highlights her role as a loving caretaker, talented cook, and generous gift-giver. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death have left a profound impact on the community, where she was well-loved.
The tragic events surrounding the manhunt for Dominic Connelly underscore the serious nature of the crimes committed and the need for community vigilance. As law enforcement intensifies their efforts, the hope remains that swift justice will prevail, and the community can find a sense of safety once again.
