Usha Vance Discusses the Meaning of Mother’s Day and Her Role as Second Lady

FIRST ON FOX: As families across the United States celebrate Mother’s Day 2025, second lady Usha Vance shared insights with Fox News Digital on the significance of the holiday and her plans for the special occasion.

Balancing her duties as second lady and the responsibilities of motherhood, Mrs. Vance expressed how her schedule has changed since taking on her current role.

She remarked, “The balancing act today is sometimes easier than it was when I was working full-time in the private sector because I have more control over my schedule and do not feel pulled in as many directions.” This perspective offers a glimpse into her commitment to both her family and her role in public service.

However, she acknowledged that raising children in the public eye presents unique challenges. “That said, raising children in the public eye poses new challenges,” she affirmed, highlighting the complexities of maintaining family privacy while under scrutiny.

Despite these challenges, Mrs. Vance emphasized her gratitude for being involved in her children’s lives. “While I certainly miss working, I am grateful that I have the time to ensure that our home life is as normal and stable as possible,” she stated.

Usha Vance has a distinguished background as a litigator, having clerked for Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Brett Kavanaugh during their respective tenures. Now, balancing her professional commitments with her family life, she and her husband, Vice President JD Vance, are raising three young children: Ewan, aged 7, Vivek, aged 5, and Mirabel, aged 3.

The couple’s journey began at Yale University Law School, where they both graduated before marrying in 2014. Their partnership has been a foundation for both their professional ambitions and family life.

Reflecting on her own mother’s influence, Lakshmi Chilukuri, Mrs. Vance shared lessons learned over the years. “My mom does not often give direct advice, but I’ve learned from her example in countless ways,” she noted thoughtfully.

One quality she cherishes is her mother’s ability to make her feel important and valued. “One of her gifts as a parent is always making me feel like I have her full attention, no matter how busy she might be, and I’ve tried very hard to make my children feel the same way,” she explained.

This past Thursday, the Vances attended a Mother’s Day celebration honoring military moms, hosted by first lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump. The event recognized the sacrifices made by service members and the importance of family support.

Mrs. Vance shared her experience at the event: “I shared an early Mother’s Day celebration with military mothers at the White House,” indicating her involvement with families connected to the armed forces.

On the actual holiday, the Vance family plans a quieter celebration. “On Sunday, we will have a quiet day, with a family hike and dessert baked by JD,” she revealed, showing her appreciation for simple yet meaningful family traditions.

Fox News Digital learned that the vice president, alongside their children, is preparing a special surprise for Mrs. Vance—a hazelnut brown butter cake that she is eagerly looking forward to enjoying.

In terms of gifts, Mrs. Vance hinted that her children were too excited to wait until Mother’s Day. “My kids made me presents at preschool, but they were too excited to wait until Mother’s Day, so we opened them early,” she said with a smile.

In a conversation with Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt last August, Mrs. Vance described her own upbringing, noting that her parents maintained a relaxed approach. “As long as I was working really hard at things that I cared about, that’s what mattered,” she reflected on the greater lessons instilled by her family.

Her transition into the role of second lady came after she left her position as a litigator at the law firm Munger, Tolles and Olson, when her husband was selected as Trump’s running mate. This shift in focus presents a new chapter in her ongoing commitment to public service while nurturing a young family.

Embracing the Journey of Motherhood

Mother’s Day for Usha Vance is not just a day of celebration but a reflection of her journey as a mother in the public eye. The balance she seeks between her responsibilities as second lady and her role as a mom illustrates the complexities faced by many women today.

In summary, Mrs. Vance’s candid sharing of her experiences sheds light on the modern motherhood landscape, particularly within the framework of public service. The lessons learned from her own mother resonate deeply, guiding her approach to parenting while navigating the demands of her role.

For Usha Vance, Mother’s Day encapsulates both personal and shared experiences, reinforcing the importance of family ties and the commitments that shape their lives.
