Utah Students Unite in Prayer at Vigil Honoring Charlie Kirk’s Christian Legacy

On a solemn Friday evening, hundreds of students at Utah State University gathered to remember Charlie Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, who was tragically shot two days prior. The vigil was organized by the campus chapter of Turning Point USA and served as a poignant tribute to Kirk’s life and beliefs.

The atmosphere was heavy with grief, as students came together to honor a figure who had greatly influenced their lives. Kaitlyn Griffiths, president of the Turning Point USA chapter, expressed the necessity of this gathering, saying, “We just want to have our community come together in this really dark time. Especially something that happened so close to home for us. And we want to be able to gather and celebrate this man’s life.”

Remembering a Legacy

Kirk, only 31 years old at the time of his death, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University during an event that was part of a nationwide tour titled The American Comeback Tour. His assassination has left many in the conservative community in shock, and the vigil was a way for students to process their grief together.

Students filled the campus quad, surrounded by a heavy police presence to ensure safety. The evening involved heartfelt prayers and a moving film that showcased Kirk’s impactful career as a conservative activist.

Emphasizing Faith

Griffiths highlighted Kirk’s values during the vigil. She said, “I’m a Christian. I believe that Jesus Christ died for us, and Charlie Kirk believed in the same things. The thing that he always said he wanted to be remembered for was his courage and his faith, so we’re trying to focus our event tonight on celebrating his faith and the man that he was, and how strongly and harshly he worked for the things that he cared for.”

A Call to Action

Travis Ferraro, a fellow student, shared a similar sentiment, stating his belief that God called him to pray for those affected by Kirk’s death. He said, “I felt called by God to pray over everybody, and pray for their families and for everyone surrounding him. And also just to give a devotional, just about how to treat each other with kindness.” This message of kindness resonated throughout the vigil, emphasizing the community’s desire to support one another in such trying times.

Arrest Made in Connection with Kirk’s Murder

On the same day as the vigil, authorities announced the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with Charlie Kirk’s murder. According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson was taken into custody after a family member reported that he confessed to the crime. This news brought a mix of relief and continued sorrow to the gathered students.

Impact of Charlie Kirk

As the sun set, reflections on Kirk’s influence permeated the crowd. Libby Rasmussen, a student who attended the vigil, shared her personal impact from Kirk’s teachings. She stated, “I am here because Charlie Kirk made a really big impact on my life. I started watching him probably about 3 or 4 years ago when I was a senior in high school, and he’s just really shaped who I am, what I believe in and my values. I don’t think there’s anyone else on this earth like him.”

Faith and Values

Rasmussen elaborated on how Kirk shaped her views on faith and politics. She remarked, “Just him going around and preaching that the Bible is the way, and that you just have to believe in God and be faithful. His faith was unwavering, and that is what I really just want to carry along throughout the rest of my life as well.”

Continuing Kirk’s Legacy

Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Lane Frantzve, and their two young children. His legacy continues to resonate deeply within the community he impacted so profoundly.

Manny Chapa, another attendee, expressed his own faith, stating, “I definitely believe in God. I believe in Christ, and [Kirk] just stands behind that. And one of the last things he was able to preach, before his passing, was God. He was able to preach God while he was up on that stage. And it’s just beautiful to see a man like that.”
