Veteran Organization Acts to Evacuate Americans from Israel Amid Rising Tensions and Criticism of U.S. Foreign Policy

A veteran-led rescue organization is intensifying its efforts to evacuate United States citizens and allies from Israel. This mission comes as tensions soar in the region, following weeks of intensified airstrikes between Israel and Iran.

Project DYNAMO, a nonprofit established by veterans and intelligence professionals, specializes in extracting Americans and allies from high-risk circumstances and disaster zones. Mario Duarte, the organization’s president and CEO, addressed the urgency of their efforts, stating, “We fill the gap left by the bureaucratic nature of government. There is always a need for someone to assist fellow Americans, especially when they are in dangerous situations.”

The organization began operations in 2021, founded in response to the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Since then, Project DYNAMO has facilitated over 7,000 rescues in various disaster scenarios, both internationally and domestically. Beyond physical rescues, the organization also provides psychological support to evacuees, recognizing the emotional toll that such experiences can have.

Urgent Evacuations as Military Response Escalates

As the geopolitical situation in the Middle East deteriorates, particularly following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Americans present in the area are attempting to flee. Recent estimates indicate around 700,000 Americans live in Israel, the majority of whom hold dual citizenship.

In a direct response to the rising tensions initiated by Israel’s military operations against Iran, Project DYNAMO commenced its evacuation process. On Sunday, the organization dispatched its tenth bus from Israel to Jordan, facilitating safe passage for individuals seeking refuge from escalating violence.

Duarte explained the precariousness of the situation, noting, “For several days, the U.S. government has indicated that an operation to extract Americans might occur. However, they also advise not to wait for governmental intervention. The risks are substantial; many individuals simply want to leave Israel.”

Every evacuee is monitored from the moment they enter the care of Project DYNAMO, ensuring that the organization can account for individuals even during chaotic evacuations. Following the recent bombing of a residential building in Israel, the organization acted swiftly to launch additional rescue operations, with the capacity to evacuate approximately 1,000 people per week.

U.S. Government’s Efforts Under Scrutiny

As of last Friday, the United States had evacuated 79 staff members and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Israel, just one day prior to President Donald Trump’s order for devastating airstrikes against Iranian nuclear targets. This military flight represented the second known evacuation occurring in the critical days leading to the military action, as a plane carrying evacuees departed Tel Aviv for Sofia, Bulgaria, before transferring to a flight intended for Washington.

Internal reports indicate that over 6,400 Americans residing in Israel have submitted inquiries regarding U.S.-chartered evacuation options. An additional 3,265 individuals sought assistance through an emergency hotline, illustrating the increasing demand for safe extraction from the volatile region.

Challenges in Evacuating High Numbers of Citizens

Each day, between 300 and 500 Americans are estimated to require evacuation assistance from Israel. The U.S. government is currently evaluating options, contemplating whether to utilize military flights or naval vessels to facilitate the extraction of Americans from this fraught environment.

Duarte remarked, “The risk to Americans has escalated significantly. This is not due solely to the current administration’s decisions. Over the past few years, particularly under the Biden administration, weakened foreign policy positions have allowed adversaries to exert influence in this crisis. The effects of these policies are palpable in this situation.”

To date, Project DYNAMO has successfully evacuated 228 individuals, including Americans and allies from Israel, amongst them 30 veterans attending a retreat and several young children. Despite these successes, Duarte highlighted that thousands of additional U.S. citizens await evacuation, leading to a backlog of requests primarily due to funding limitations.

Pioneering the Evacuation Efforts

Despite facing logistical hurdles, Duarte expressed confidence in Project DYNAMO’s capability to provide safe and efficient rescue operations for at-risk individuals in Israel. “Navigating these challenges is no easy task,” he remarked, “but it is our responsibility to act. This is an opportunity to demonstrate the best of the American spirit abroad, providing hope and safety to those in peril.”
