Violence Erupts in California Prison Resulting in Death of Inmate

Officials are conducting an investigation into the deadly incident involving a death row inmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano, California, which occurred on Friday. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is leading the inquiry into this alarming event.

The incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m. when Mario Renteria, a 36-year-old convicted murderer, allegedly attacked fellow inmate Julian Mendez, age 46. Reports indicate that Renteria initiated the assault, prompting immediate intervention from prison staff.

Authorities ordered both men to comply and get down, but their directives went unheeded, according to a news release from the corrections department. Initially, prison officers used chemical agents to halt the violence, but more than 30 additional inmates quickly overwhelmed Renteria.

Despite the officers’ efforts, the situation escalated further. The guards deployed multiple blast grenades to regain control in an attempt to subdue the violent altercation between the inmates.

Medical personnel arrived promptly to assist Mendez, who sustained severe injuries during the melee. He was rushed to the prison’s triage area, but despite immediate life-saving efforts, a doctor pronounced him dead at 11:05 a.m.

Investigation results revealed an improvised weapon at the scene; however, the type of weapon has not been disclosed. Meanwhile, Renteria is currently in restricted housing as officials continue their investigation.

CDCR has since limited inmate movement within the facility to support a thorough investigation led by the prison’s Investigative Services Unit, as well as the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities have also notified the Office of the Inspector General, and the Kern County Coroner will determine Mendez’s cause of death.

Mendez had been in the prison system since December 2, 2004, and was on death row for his role in the first-degree murder of two teenagers, a crime committed in 2002. Meanwhile, Renteria was received from Riverside County on April 27, 2022, and is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder as well as arson, classified as a third-strike offense.

Kern Valley State Prison, which opened its doors in 2005, is designed to accommodate over 3,100 inmates in both minimum and high-security custody. This facility has faced scrutiny in the past for incidents of violence, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety and security within California’s prison system.
