A recent encounter at Union Station in Washington, D.C. has drawn significant attention online after conservative activist Cam Higby sprayed a woman with pepper spray. This incident began when video footage emerged showing the woman allegedly lunging at Higby and striking him with his MAGA hat. Higby characterized the clash as emblematic of his efforts to address political hostility and foster open debate via his Fearless Tour, an initiative inspired by the late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
Higby, who aims to shed light on violence stemming from the political left while advocating for peaceful dialogue, held a debate event at the University of Maryland prior to the confrontation at Union Station. His mission emphasizes the need for civil discourse amid increasing societal tensions.
In a phone interview with Fox News Digital, Higby recounted that his group was engaging peacefully with nearby protesters when the woman approached and exhibited aggressive behavior.
“At a certain moment, she dropped to her knees and began yelling at us while touching us,” Higby explained. “I instructed her to back off and not to touch me, but she lunged at me and initiated the attack.”
Video evidence reveals the woman pushing Higby backward into his chair, seizing his hat, and striking him before tumbling into a bush where he deployed his pepper spray. Higby expressed uncertainty regarding whether the woman possessed any weapons, noting she kept her hands in her pockets throughout the altercation.
Following the encounter, the woman sought assistance at a light pole where fellow protesters helped her rinse her eyes and called for police intervention.
Initially, authorities did not appear to take action. However, when U.S. Park Police arrived, they witnessed the woman becoming combative, resisting arrest, and allegedly assaulting the officers. Higby remarked on the chaotic scene, saying, “At that point, she was struggling with federal officers, who attempted to arrest her. Her father yelled at us, ‘Why did you spray my daughter?’ while she was actively fighting with them.”
Ultimately, it required multiple federal officers to subdue her before she was placed in a police vehicle. Higby confirmed that he and his colleague were identified as victims in police reports, and the woman now faces federal charges.
As of now, U.S. Park Police have not released the woman’s name or specific charges against her, leaving many questions about the incident unanswered.
Higby has faced violence before. He was previously involved in an incident during an anti-ICE rally in Seattle, where he was allegedly attacked by multiple individuals who tried to remove his gear and physically assault him. During that confrontation, he defended himself by using pepper spray.
In that June incident, Higby sustained injuries requiring emergency room treatment, including a concussion and ongoing symptoms of nausea and dizziness. He expressed that he now carries Mace at all times, stating, “I believe I show remarkable restraint in how I use my Mace. After numerous verbal warnings not to touch me, I think it would be entirely reasonable to deploy it. I receive criticism due to the fact that it was a woman involved, but I need to consider my safety and the potential risks in any confrontation.”
On college campuses, Higby and his associates have gained notoriety for organizing debate tables inspired by Kirk’s approach, featuring signs declaring, “The left is violent! Let’s Debate!” Despite some critics suggesting these messages might provoke aggressive responses, Higby insisted that the most recent Union Station incident occurred without any provocative signage. The only identifier for his group at that moment was their MAGA hats.
“Our goal is to energize people and encourage discussions on political topics,” he stated. “However, we do not permit unauthorized physical contact, and therein lies the problem. I believe my views are largely reasonable. If someone cannot control their impulses to the point of resorting to violence, that reflects on them, not on us.”
As political discourse continues to evolve in America, incidents like the one at Union Station demonstrate the heightened tensions present in public interactions. Advocates on both sides of the political spectrum often find themselves in heated confrontations, raising concerns about personal safety and the future of civil debate.
This situation serves as a cautionary tale in today’s polarized atmosphere, shedding light on the potential for misunderstandings and violence in politically charged environments.
As the dialogue surrounding political activism continues, maintaining respect and promoting peaceful engagement will become increasingly pivotal in avoiding confrontations that can escalate quickly.
