A Virginia high school football coach has gone missing during a child pornography investigation, raising concerns among his family and the local community. The 46-year-old coach, Travis L. Turner, is a respected figure at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, but he was last seen on November 20 entering a wooded area with a firearm, according to statements from a family attorney.
Turner left his home in what was described as a “heavily wooded and mountainous area,” according to attorney Adrian Collins, who issued a statement on behalf of Turner’s family. After he departed, the family’s last communication with him occurred around the same day, as detailed by Collins.
The statement emphasized that Turner had not been subject to any arrest warrants at the time of his disappearing act. “The last known contact the family had with Travis occurred on or about Thursday, November 20, after he left his residence to walk in the woods with a firearm,” it stated.
When Turner didn’t return home that evening, his wife notified local authorities, only to be informed about a 24-hour waiting period for filing a proper missing person report. The next day, she filed the report with the Virginia State Police (VSP).
Since then, family members and friends have organized search efforts in the surrounding areas, but severe weather conditions have hampered their initiatives. The need to refrain from interfering with the official search by local authorities has also posed challenges.
Five days after Turner disappeared, law enforcement officials revealed that they had secured ten warrants against him. The charges include five counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may arise.
Turner is now classified as a fugitive, as announced by the Virginia State Police. His disappearance has alarmed the community, as many are still reeling from the news of his alleged actions.
On November 21, the day following his last known sighting, authorities were at his residence intending to interview him about the ongoing investigation. Police made it clear that they weren’t seeking to arrest Turner at that moment during their visit on the day of his disappearance.
Following the formal charges against her husband, Leslie Caudill Turner expressed disbelief regarding the allegations during an interview. She stated, “None of that is true. He’s a good dad and a good husband, and we want him home. That’s it. I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything. I’m sorry.” Her plea underscores the emotional turmoil affecting the family during this distressing time.
In a bid to locate Turner, police have initiated a thorough search across Wise County. Authorities are employing various resources, including drones, K-9 units and foot patrols to cover larger areas effectively.
Last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, sweatpants, and glasses, Turner’s physical description has been circulated widely in hopes of generating tips and leads. The Virginia missing person database continues to be updated with information on his case.
Local law enforcement is actively seeking information regarding Turner’s whereabouts. Anyone with potential insight into his location or any information concerning the investigation is urged to contact the Virginia State Police at (276) 228-3131.
With the investigation still unfolding, officials remain committed to resolving the case and bringing closure to both the community and the Turner family. Updates will be provided as more information is released pertaining to Turner’s disappearance and the allegations against him.
