In a cohesive letter addressed to their fellow chiefs, the sheriffs firmly stated, “The choice is clear. The decision is ours.” They celebrate Miyares’ dedication to improving the state’s law enforcement community, urging fellow sheriffs to unite behind him in the quest for re-election.
Jones, who served as an assistant attorney general, has focused his campaign on protecting Virginia from perceived threats presented by the Trump administration. However, the collective voice of 19 sheriffs portrays his policy agenda in an unfavorable light, suggesting it undermines law enforcement.
The sheriffs pointedly described Jones’ proposals as detrimental, stating that he has favored approaches that weaken Virginia’s law enforcement infrastructure. They criticized his support for initiatives that prioritize social programs over law enforcement, declaring that such policies prioritize criminals rather than victims.
“Jay Jones has been an outspoken advocate for measures that negatively impact Virginia’s law enforcement community. By endorsing the replacement of prosecutors with social workers, he places criminals first and victims last. This misguided legislation is not just a policy failure; it is a direct assault on Virginia families,” the sheriffs expressed in their letter.
