Washington D.C. Launches ‘DC is Open’ Campaign to Attract Visitors Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government remains shut down since October 1, 2025, Washington D.C.’s official tourism bureau has initiated a campaign to encourage Americans to visit the city. The campaign, titled ‘DC is Open,’ aims to reassure potential visitors that the capital is vibrant and welcoming.

The message from the campaign emphasizes that the nation’s capital continues to offer a plethora of activities, attractions, and dining opportunities. The announcement states that D.C. is eager to receive both leisure and business travelers.

Amplifying Visitor Awareness

Destination DC, the city’s tourism organization, highlighted that the initiative intends to counter the misconception that a government shutdown equates to a halt in the city’s activities. Elliott L. Ferguson II, the president and CEO of Destination DC, expressed optimism that most of the city’s key attractions remain open and accessible to the public.

“We fully recognize that when the federal government is shut down, some visitors may mistakenly believe that D.C. is also closed,” Ferguson explained. “However, this is not the reality. Fall is an important season for both conventions and leisure travel, and we want to ensure that visitors know they can enjoy all that our city has to offer.”

The campaign is particularly relevant during this bustling travel period. Ferguson pointed out various iconic attractions, world-class hotels, and acclaimed restaurants that are open for business. In addition, visitors can still partake in a wide range of theater, sports, nightlife, and cultural events during their stay.

A Historical Response

The ‘DC is Open’ campaign was previously launched during the government shutdown of October 2013 and reintroduced in 2021 to aid in the city’s pandemic recovery. This strategic approach reflects a commitment to tourism even amidst federal uncertainties.

According to the tourism board, tourists can expect to enjoy all open-air parks and memorials on the National Mall. However, some visitor centers and ranger-led services face limitations due to the current circumstances.

Notably, private museums like the Museum of the Bible and the National Building Museum remain unaffected by the government shutdown. Yet, major institutions such as the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo are currently closed, as confirmed by Destination DC.

Impact on Visitor Numbers

Destination DC also encourages visitors to explore various sporting events happening throughout the shutdown. Fans can still catch games featuring local teams like the Washington Commanders and Washington Capitals during this period.

Public Transport and City Services Continue

Despite the shutdown, public transportation networks, including Metro services, are fully operational. Moreover, D.C. government services continue seamlessly, involving sanitation, schools, parks, and various ancillary services.

As Ferguson noted, “The National Mall isn’t closed; it just feels quieter.
