Instead of alerting law enforcement, associates instructed him to arrange a Lyft ride for Joseph to another shelter in Worcester County. Joseph was not taken into custody until eight months later in February.

Fetherston explained that despite this horrifying case, it was not an isolated incident. He pointed out that many acts of violence, including rape, domestic violence, and sex trafficking, occur regularly within the Massachusetts immigrant shelter system. A shaken Fetherston stated, “The entire experience has shaken me to my core.” He penned a letter to the Attorney General this Monday, emphasizing that beyond being a personal ordeal, these issues reflect a broader, systemic failure.

In his letter, he stated, “This is not an isolated incident. Despite my raising the alarm, there has been a deliberate wall of silence. No reforms, no accountability. Nonetheless, Healey previously expressed outrage over a separate incident in which a 28-year-old undocumented immigrant, Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, used a shelter to conceal an AR-15 and nearly $1 million in illegal drugs.
