The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is facing scrutiny over its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which a former whistleblower argues reflects a broader Biden administration agenda. The nearly defunct USAID site once featured a page dedicated to promoting DEI, which has raised concerns about the agency’s direction.
Former USAID administrator Samantha Power emphasized the importance of DEI in her remarks on the archived website. She stated, “Each of us has a responsibility to address bigotry, gender discrimination, and structural racism and uphold individual dignity. This isn’t just one of our values; it’s our mission—one hand extended out to another to meet people where they are and treat others as equals.”
The archived USAID page asserts that the agency is dedicated to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, promising enhanced opportunities for all employees. It outlines a comprehensive DEI strategy aimed at promoting equity and accountability within the organization.
Mark Moyar, a former official at USAID during 2018-2019, spoke out about the DEI initiatives, saying they prioritized ideology over agency objectives. He noted how employees were compelled to attend indoctrination sessions, suggesting these initiatives foster division rather than unity. According to Moyar, “Samantha Power’s emphasis on DEI was part of a larger Biden administration effort to infuse DEI into every federal agency. We saw this with very negative effects everywhere.”
Moyar elaborated that the focus on DEI, particularly following the George Floyd protests, diminished the United States’ standing in international affairs. He asserted, “When DEI became a ‘central’ focus at USAID, it resulted in other countries taking the United States less seriously.” His concerns extend to the global image of the USA as funding for DEI initiatives, like workshops and educational resources, raised eyebrows internationally.
According to Moyar, the agency directed funds toward questionable DEI projects, further harming America’s reputation abroad. He remarked, “They were actually funding DEI events all over the world, such as comic books and workshops, which can undermine our image overseas. Most people recognize DEI for the silliness that it is and the divisiveness it causes.”
Moyar also criticized the approach taken toward women’s empowerment initiatives during Power’s tenure. He stated, “Everything for Samantha Power had to be viewed through a gendered lens,” suggesting that gender-focused analysis was overly funded and yielded little in return.
Recent discussions around USAID have intensified, especially given the Trump administration’s plans to review federal agencies. Critics, including Representative Ilhan Omar, have condemned the potential cuts and restructuring, saying, “It is a really, really sad day in America. We are witnessing a constitutional crisis.”
Amidst the political tensions, Elon Musk has criticized USAID as a “viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America,” leading to calls for its closure. As the landscape around federal funding and priorities continues to evolve, the future of USAID remains uncertain.
