The White House continues to assert that last month’s Operation Midnight Hammer effectively neutralized Iran’s nuclear capabilities. This assertion comes despite a recent report from a major newspaper indicating that some enriched uranium may have survived the targeted U.S. aerial assault.
According to sources, The New York Times reported that a fraction of the near-bomb-grade enriched uranium, which was hidden underground, apparently withstood the strikes executed by B-2 stealth bombers on June 21, 2025. This situation raises concerns that some of this uranium could still be accessible to Iranian nuclear engineers.
When questioned regarding the report, Anna Kelly, a White House deputy press secretary, emphasized the administration’s stance. She stated that the Operation Midnight Hammer has significantly diminished the threat posed by Iran. “As President Trump has consistently noted, Operation Midnight Hammer completely obliterated Iran’s nuclear facilities. The entire world is safer because of his leadership,” Kelly noted.
This sentiment reflects a larger narrative that President Donald Trump has echoed since the operation commenced: Iran’s nuclear sites were decisively eliminated.
Operation Midnight Hammer began with the departure of B-2 stealth bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri at the start of June 21. Some bombers executed a diversionary tactic by flying west into the Pacific. Meanwhile, the primary strike force, composed of seven B-2 Spirit bombers, traveled stealthily eastward for an 18-hour journey while maintaining minimal communication.
This complicated mission required refueling multiple times without any landings. Upon approaching Iran, the strike group coordinated with support units from Central Command.
Approximately at 5 p.m. EST, a U.S. submarine initiated the assault by launching over 24 Tomahawk missiles targeting crucial surface infrastructure just as the core strike team approached Iranian airspace.
To confuse Iranian defenses, the B-2 strike group deployed additional strategies as they neared key facilities at Fordow and Natanz. In total, 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs, notably developed as bunker-busters, targeted the nuclear sites. Completing the assault, Tomahawk missiles were launched towards additional targets in Isfahan.
Following the success of the mission, Trump took to Truth Social, declaring, “The U.S. military executed massive precision strikes on three vital nuclear facilities within the Iranian regime: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.” He further addressed the nation, asserting that Iran’s nuclear enrichment infrastructure had been “completely and totally obliterated.”
Furthermore, Trump warned, “Iran, often referred to as the bully of the Middle East, must now consider peace. Should they choose not to, any future attacks would be greater and much simpler to execute.”
The White House has faced criticism in the wake of the B-2 strike from certain quarters of the media, which claim that the effectiveness of the attack may have been overstated. Both Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth have vocally condemned what they label as
