Wikipedia Co-Founder Urges Elon Musk to Investigate Government’s Role in Online Encyclopedia

Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, has called upon Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency to investigate allegations of government involvement in the online encyclopedia he helped establish over two decades ago.

In a recent post on X, Sanger voiced his concerns directly to Musk, asking, “Hi @ElonMusk. Wikipedia co-founder here. May I ask you to determine what branches of the U.S. government—if any—have employees paid to edit, monitor, update, lobby, etc., Wikipedia? Such operations should be defunded, if any. If there are none, we’d like to know. Agree?” Sanger’s message reflects his long-standing concerns regarding the integrity of the platform.

Since departing from Wikipedia in 2002, Sanger has consistently critiqued the platform’s editorial direction, especially beginning in 2005 when he perceived the site had shifted toward a left-wing bias.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Sanger stated, “I like to call myself its founder now because I kind of want to distance myself from it.” This statement highlights his discontent with how Wikipedia has evolved beyond its original mission.
