Willie Robertson Reflects on Father Phil’s Legacy and Last Words

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson has opened up about the poignant final words shared by his late father, Phil Robertson, before his passing. In May, Phil Robertson, co-founder of the Duck Commander brand and beloved patriarch of the Duck Dynasty family, died at the age of 79 after battling serious health issues, including Alzheimer’s disease.

During a heartfelt interview with TV Insider, Willie, now 53, recounted the emotional conversation he had with his father in the days leading up to his death. Willie mentioned that the family was undoubtedly concerned about Phil’s deteriorating health.

“Phil had been struggling with Alzheimer’s for a while,” Willie shared. “It was on our mind for sure, his condition. It’s part of life.”

Willie recalled that despite his illness, Phil maintained a strong faith. He described his father’s last request, stating, “He told us before, ‘Do not cry at my funeral. I know where I’m going.’” This message encapsulated Phil’s unwavering belief and provided comfort to his family during their time of grief.

A Life of Impact and Faith

Throughout his life, Phil touched the lives of countless individuals. Willie reflected on the vast impact his father had on people, emphasizing how everyone seemed to recognize Phil’s legacy of faith. Willie added, “Phil would have wanted us to do exactly what we’re doing. Whatever is a reflection of that faith, and our show is a reflection of our faith.”

He acknowledged the delicate balance they maintained, saying, “We’re not trying to preach to people or convert people, but I think you can see the fruit in the faith of our show and our family and how it sticks together through good times and bad.” Willie pointed out that the significance lies in honoring Phil’s memory and maintaining the values he instilled in them.

A Tribute to Phil on the New Show

Phil, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in December, passed away during the week that the family’s new show, Duck Dynasty: The Revival, premiered. Although Phil was unable to participate due to his health, the first episode included a touching tribute to him.

The tribute featured a heartfelt moment of Willie reading an introduction for the show, which Phil cherished while sitting in an armchair. Willie asked for Phil’s opinion, saying, “What do you think, Phil?” Phil responded with a thumbs up, a moment that brought warmth and nostalgia to viewers and family alike.

Willie reacted to his father’s gesture, exclaiming, “Ah, that was awesome!” The scene beautifully transitioned into a tribute, showcasing Phil’s enduring spirit even in his final moments.

The Family’s Journey through Grief

Willie’s wife, Korie, joined him during the interview and commented on the surreal timing of Phil’s death. She reflected on the profound nature of capturing that singular clip of Phil during filming, noting, “It was really special to our family that we had that one little clip.”

She continued, “It felt like, ‘OK, this is his opportunity to pass on the torch to us.’” Korie expressed a hope that the next generation would carry forward Phil’s legacy, emphasizing his principles of faith above all else.

Korie highlighted Phil’s motto, stating, “His first was faith. All our kids are living that out in really beautiful ways with family.” She elaborated on how the show serves as a platform to showcase the value of family connections and generational traditions.

Continuing the Robertson Legacy

Phil Robertson founded Duck Commander in 1972, which later became the foundation for the Duck Dynasty television series that aired from 2012 until its conclusion in 2017. Following Phil’s passing, Willie and Korie have been receiving an overwhelming outpouring of support from fans, sharing how Phil’s life impacted many.

“I think it’s a combination of some sadness, just we miss him, but also joy and happiness from what he believed,” Willie said. He reflected on the many lives Phil changed through his teachings, whether directly or indirectly, through the show and other avenues.

While discussing the emotional toll of watching Phil suffer from Alzheimer’s, Willie articulated a sense of preparedness within the family for his father’s passing. “We knew, he’s ready to move on,” he remarked, adding that their memories of Phil helped mitigate their grief. Korie echoed this sentiment, saying, “Even in the hard things, we laugh a lot through it.”

Passion for Faith and Family

As Korie shared more about Phil’s journey, she noted how important it was to keep his legacy alive, symbolizing not just his devotion to family but also his deep faith. “Just in passing down that legacy — one of the things that we’ve just been reminded of over and over again is just this man who lived down on the river, didn’t own a cell phone or a computer — what God did with his life,” she reflected.

Korie concluded that Phil’s faith had instilled a sense of courage in their family, affirming, “We follow Jesus, and that’s who we are.” Willie added that it was Phil’s commitment to his faith that united their family and laid the foundation for their success.

The Family Bond Through Adversity

Phil’s wife Kay, aged 77, has also discussed their marital challenges early in their relationship due to Phil’s struggles with alcoholism. Nonetheless, both she and Phil used their experiences to fortify their family bond through faith.

“It’s all responsible to his faith and his life change, of he and mom together to keep this family together,” Willie reflected on the enduring legacy his parents created together. With hopes of inspiring future generations, the Robertson family continues to highlight Phil’s commitment to faith, family, and the hunting business that defined their lives.
