Winona Ryder, the critically acclaimed actress known for her roles in numerous iconic films, recently opened up about her romantic experiences and memorable moments from her Hollywood career. Settled in a loving relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn, Ryder also reminisces about her youthful crushes on renowned actors, revealing some surprising keepsakes along the way.
In an interview with Elle U.K. published on Wednesday, Ryder shared an amusing anecdote about a peculiar gift she received from Christopher Walken. During their collaboration on the political thriller Turks & Caicos in 2014, Walken presented her with a store-bought rotisserie chicken. Given her admiration for Walken at the time, she decided to keep the chicken’s wishbone for longer than one might expect.
“I still have the wishbone and am trying to make it into a necklace,” she confessed, shedding light on the quirky relic that has become a nostalgic token of their time together.
While Ryder did not specify the nature of her admiration for Walken, she did candidly express her romantic feelings for Al Pacino during their joint project. Reflecting on their time working together on a workshop for Richard III, she described being completely infatuated with the legendary actor.
“I was absolutely in love with Al Pacino,” Ryder shared, reminiscing about their adventures in New York City. The two explored various coffee spots across the city as Pacino, an ardent coffee lover, introduced her to his favorite brews.
“I remember telling him, ‘I’m completely in love with you,’” she chuckled. Pacino, who is over 30 years her senior, responded with affection but clearly set the boundaries of their relationship.
Despite her unrequited feelings, Ryder continued to work with Pacino, starring alongside him in the film Looking for Richard in 1996. The memories of their youthful interactions remain warm and light-hearted, even as she later encountered Pacino’s girlfriend, who happened to be younger than Ryder herself.
“Dude, I’m throwing myself at you,” Ryder humorously recalled her thoughts during that meeting, maintaining a sense of camaraderie with the actor who has since been a friend.
Ryder’s journey through love took a more promising turn when she met Scott Mackinlay Hahn at the premiere of Black Swan in 2010. A charming misunderstanding occurred when Hahn mistook her for another actress, Milla Jovovich. Ryder found this mix-up endearing and decided to take the initiative.
“I was very direct. I just asked him, ‘Do you want to go on a date?’” she recalled, evident enthusiasm radiating from her words as she reflected on their first encounter.
Ryder now perceives Hahn as her husband, despite not having officially tied the knot yet. Their relationship flourishes, marked by mutual respect and affection, and they have plans to marry soon.
In a delightful twist, Ryder revealed that Hahn plays a significant role in their home, particularly in the kitchen. “He has a gift for making healthy food delicious,” she stated, recalling a delicious curry he prepared recently that exceeded her previous culinary experiences.
As wise and entertaining as her memories may be, Ryder maintains a focus on the happiness she has found in her current relationship and the adventures in her career. Not only does she appreciate how far she has come in the industry, but she also holds dear the lessons learned and the bonds formed along the way.
With a successful career behind her and a loving partner by her side, Winona Ryder continues to embrace her journey. Reflecting on past encounters with iconic figures and the treasures from her younger days brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia. However, it is her present that shines brightly, with exciting plans on the horizon.
