Family-owned King Cone has announced plans to eliminate artificial food dyes from its treats. Owners Judy and Ben Klosinski shared that their decision was influenced by family experiences and ongoing research about food additives.

Judy Klosinski explained, “The switch away from using artificial coloring came as Ben and his family started researching dyes used in the food they consumed.” The change was prompted by concerns over Ben’s son displaying health issues related to artificial foods.

As they looked into healthier options, the Klosinski family faced challenges finding suitable ingredients from their suppliers. Judy noted, “Over the years, many families came in with small children who weren’t allowed to enjoy brightly colored ice creams – and it was heartbreaking to witness.” This empathy has driven their commitment to provide safer options.

New Offerings at King Cone

Currently, King Cone offers dye-free versions of its popular flavors, including the “Superdude” and “Fruity Pebbles” varieties. The goal is ambitious: to transition all flavors to be completely dye-free by the end of 2025. Judy emphasizes, “As we craft our homemade ice cream ourselves, we discovered that vibrant colors typically required anywhere from one to four dyes that are now facing bans in the U.S.”

Regulatory Changes and New Ingredients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved several new natural color additives, enhancing the landscape of food colorings. Among these are Galdieria extract blue, butterfly pea flower extract, and calcium phosphate.

Galdieria extract, sourced from the unicellular algae Galdieria sulphuraria, offers a blue hue that is now permissible for use in ice cream. The butterfly pea flower extract, derived from its dried petals, can create a range of colors, including blue, green, and purple, making it particularly suitable for sweets and candies. Meanwhile, calcium phosphate serves as a white coloring agent, suitable for various confections.

Judy Klosinski expressed optimism about their transition, stating, “While we weren’t sure how customers would react to the change, many have shared that they appreciate more options with fewer harmful dyes.” The family business has received a flurry of positive feedback from patrons, many of whom feel relieved to see a safer ice cream option for their families.

Ben Klosinski added, “As a family-owned business, we were overwhelmed with the positive comments. It is gratifying to know that customers appreciate our commitment to providing safer alternatives for their children.”

Another example is Stella’s Homemade Ice Cream in South Carolina, which also announced its decision to move away from artificial food dyes. They have been experimenting with natural alternatives, including spirulina, turmeric, and purple carrot juice as replacements.

This shift reflects a broader consumer demand for healthier, more transparent food choices, particularly for children. Parents are increasingly advocating for less processed foods in their families’ diets.
