EXCLUSIVE: The state of Wisconsin risks overlooking critical lessons from its neighbor Minnesota, where a fraud scandal has recently emerged. Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, who is vying for Wisconsin’s governorship in 2026, expressed this warning on Thursday.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz currently faces intensifying scrutiny following reports that members of the Somali community in the Twin Cities allegedly diverted taxpayer-funded meal money to entities overseas, including ties to the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Tiffany criticized the outgoing Democratic Gov. Tony Evers for his vocal opposition to the Trump administration’s initiatives aimed at auditing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This program, commonly referred to as SNAP, provides crucial food assistance across all states.
Earlier in the day, Tiffany’s office disclosed a letter intended for Evers, which he planned to send later that afternoon.
In the letter, Tiffany articulated concerns that many Wisconsin residents share.
“Like many Wisconsin residents, I was disappointed by your recent public statements ruling out cooperation with the federal government to detect fraud in the food stamp program,” Tiffany wrote. “We should all agree that fraud in safety net programs is unacceptable, which is why I encourage you to reconsider your position.”
He continued, “Your stance is particularly shocking given recent events in Minnesota. There, the governor’s lack of transparency and mismanagement of food security programs has prompted multiple investigations into a staggering $1 billion fraud scheme allegedly involving Somalian terrorists.”
The congressman from Minocqua emphasized that neglecting to address SNAP abuses undermines the program’s integrity, compromising its capacity to assist Wisconsinites who genuinely need support. He stated that withholding necessary information allows scammers and unauthorized individuals to exploit the system.
“This makes no sense,” he added emphatically.
On the same day, Tiffany took to social media to condemn Evers for rejecting a request made by USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins.
“Governor Evers is resisting federal audits of Wisconsin’s food stamp rolls for fraud,” Tiffany declared on Facebook.
Such assertions aim to awaken voters and ensure that Wisconsin does not suffer a similar fate as Minnesota, which recently faced billions in losses due to fraud.
Tiffany’s comments were a direct reaction to Evers’ recent interview with Matt Smith, an ABC affiliate in Milwaukee, who queried the governor about his refusal to allow the federal government to audit the SNAP program.
Smith referenced Rollins’ criticisms, labeling SNAP as a “broken program full of issues,” emphasizing that 29 other states agreed to federal access for fraud investigation.
In response, Evers defended his decision, asserting that Wisconsin’s system undergoes rigorous annual evaluations.
“That system is analyzed every single year, and we feel confident in it,” Evers claimed during the interview. “Asking for this information seems to be more about evading responsibility, frankly. And that is inappropriate.”
Evers expressed that the push for audits is inappropriate given the dependence of many Wisconsin families on SNAP for access to nutritious meals.
As the threat of a government shutdown loomed in November, Evers and other Democratic governors also resisted the Trump administration’s requests to halt funding for programs like Wisconsin’s FoodShare, especially with the USDA suspending monthly distribution until the government reopened.
Alongside several blue states including Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey, Evers and his counterparts sent a letter to the First Circuit Court in Boston, imploring it to deny the Trump administration’s request that state governors withdraw assistance.
When confronted with demands from the administration, Evers responded with a remarkably simple statement: “No.”
Other Wisconsin Republicans, including Rep. Bryan Steil, also came forward to support the USDA, asserting that the refusal to audit SNAP ultimately harms the program’s beneficiaries.
“Their radical base is demanding that they do anything to try to ‘stand up to Trump,’” Steil remarked. “This conduct places undue hardship on American families who rely on support.”
Amid ongoing tensions surrounding government operations, another Wisconsin Republican sought to persuade federal officials to provide an exemption for SNAP funding as the impasse lingered.
Rep. Derrick Van Orden, also from Wisconsin, co-sponsored a bill aimed at alleviating burdens on SNAP funding and testified in support of assistance for homeless veterans, sharing how he himself relied on food stamps during a difficult upbringing.
