In a significant move, the WNBA has imposed a hefty fine on Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve following her controversial behavior during a playoff game against the Phoenix Mercury. This decision comes after Reeve’s actions during and after the game, which led to her ejection and subsequent disciplinary measures.
On the night of the game, the Lynx faced elimination following an 86-81 loss. Late in the fourth quarter, Reeve was seen aggressively confronting a referee. Her behavior escalated into a verbal clash with officials after the game concluded.
Reports from The Athletic revealed that Reeve has been fined $15,000, marking one of the largest individual fines issued in the league’s history. Previously, notable fines included $2,500 for WNBA star Diana Taurasi in 2021, when she was penalized for illegal contact with a referee during the Finals.
Following her ejection, which occurred with just over 21 seconds left in the final quarter, Reeve refused to leave the court promptly. Observers noted that she directed comments toward fans while exiting the arena, signaling her discontent with the officiating. In a postgame press conference, Reeve did not hold back her criticism of the league’s officiating standards.
“If this is what the league wants, that’s fine, but I want to call for a change in leadership at the league level regarding officiating,” Reeve stated. She pointedly criticized the officiating crew, suggesting it was inappropriate for them to have been selected for a semifinals playoff game.
Reeve specifically referenced a pivotal moment in the game that sparked her outrage. Alyssa Thomas’s interception of a pass from Napheesa Collier, followed by a decisive layup, was the play that drew her ire. Unfortunately, Collier sustained a leg injury during the incident, leading Reeve to speculate that she might have suffered a fracture, although details of the injury remain unclear.
In response to the outcry surrounding the officiating, the National Basketball Referees Association defended their officials by sharing a breakdown of the play in question across social media. They emphasized that no foul had occurred and deemed the act of drawing a contact foul incidental.
Alongside Reeve, two of her assistant coaches also faced penalties after the game. Eric Thibault received a fine for inappropriate behavior towards officials during the match, while Rebekkah Brunson was penalized for an inappropriate comment made on social media directed at WNBA officials. Each assistant coach has been fined $500, adding to the costs incurred by the Lynx staff.
Moreover, WNBA coaches Becky Hammon of the Las Vegas Aces and Stephanie White of the Indiana Fever were fined $1,000 each. The penalties follow their public support of Reeve as well as their own criticisms toward the officiating during the crucial semifinals.
Hammon expressed her belief that Reeve’s remarks were justified, saying, “From what I heard, she did not tell a lie. She spoke the truth.” Hammon voiced concerns about player safety, emphasizing the need for protective measures during vulnerable moments in games.
White resonated with this sentiment, asserting that Reeve raised important points and called for accountability in officiating.
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert of the WNBA has previously addressed questions regarding officiating standards. During the All-Star Weekend in July, Engelbert acknowledged the concerns raised by players and coaches alike. She emphasized that every play is meticulously reviewed post-game, aiming to uphold a high standard of officiating across the league.
“Consistency is crucial; many people compare our games to other basketball formats, but we recognize the importance of maintaining a consistent approach in officiating,” Engelbert stated.
This high-profile incident underlines the ongoing challenges in maintaining fairness and integrity within the league’s officiating ranks. As both players and coaches continue to voice their concerns, the WNBA faces increasing pressure to ensure that such controversies do not overshadow the game.
