Writer Examines Complex Identities of Superman in New York Times Essay
A recent guest essay in the New York Times has sparked discussion by describing Superman’s overwhelming American power as disturbing. The essay, authored by MIT professor Junot Diaz, delves into the paradox of Superman’s identity as an immigrant and his impact on those who share similar backgrounds.
Diaz shared his introspective view on Superman, noting how he grew up with a critical perspective of the superhero. Instead of idolizing the Last Son of Krypton, Diaz describes himself as somewhat of a neighborhood anti-Superman. He reflects on his childhood, stating, “Always ready to inveigh against the Last Son of Krypton, always ready with long arguments laying out why he was dumb. What can I say?”
Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Diaz teaches creative writing in English while living among a Spanish-speaking family. He points out that he should have easily connected with the character. However, despite the overlapping narratives of immigration, Diaz argues that Superman does not truly represent him or his specific experiences.
“From Day 1, dude just rubbed me the wrong way,” Diaz recalls. He cites Superman’s outdated patriotism and idealized portrayal of America as a disconnect. In his eyes, the version of America depicted by Superman is far removed from the reality he knows, calling it more akin to ‘supervillain territory’ than the utopia Superman champions.
