A visionary man has proclaimed himself president of a newly formed nation located in a contentious area of land between Croatia and Serbia. This self-declared country boasts its own flag, currency, and nearly 400 citizens.
Daniel Jackson, the founder of the Free Republic of Verdis, claimed a 0.5-square-kilometer patch of forest along the Danube River, which remains unrecognized by both neighboring nations due to an ongoing border contention. Jackson stumbled upon this unclaimed territory and saw an opportunity for a creative venture.
“Verdis was an idea I had when I was 14,” expressed Jackson, now 20 years old. “What started as an experiment with friends escalated into something much bigger, realizing a dream of creating something extraordinary.”
According to reports from SWNS, Jackson formally announced the republic’s independence on May 30, 2019. The area he claimed, referred to as “pocket three,” has been recognized as the world’s second-smallest country, following Vatican City.
The digital designer and creator of virtual worlds on the popular gaming platform Roblox began to develop Verdis into a functional state at the age of 18. He described the transformation: “We initiated our journey by establishing laws and designing a flag. We have since developed a government and a capable cabinet.”
The official languages of Verdis include English, Croatian, and Serbian, while the Euro serves as the nation’s currency. Despite its cultural ties, Verdis is only reachable by boat from the Croatian city of Osijek, complicating settlement attempts amidst notable resistance.
In October 2023, Croatian authorities detained several settlers, including Jackson, subsequently deporting them and issuing a lifetime entry ban for Jackson. When questioned about the reasons for this ban, he recounted, “They deported us but couldn’t explain why. They cited concerns regarding homeland security.”
Operating what he describes as a “government in exile,” Jackson accused Croatian officials of employing surveillance measures along his country’s coastline to deter access from Serbian borders. He stated, “We have faced numerous challenges with Croatian authorities. However, we aspire to foster a positive relationship moving forward.”
He voiced concerns over the aggressive tactics employed against his burgeoning nation. Despite these difficulties, Jackson has turned to Serbia for support, commuting frequently to Belgrade where officials have responded more favorably.
Although he has been barred from returning to Croatia, Jackson remains dedicated to claiming his territory and dreams of one day living in Verdis permanently. He expressed, “If successful in our efforts, I would gladly relinquish my position and call for elections. My interest lies not in power but in being a regular citizen. This journey has been enlightening, and I take great pride in what we have accomplished.”
Verdis began with just four people but has since attracted over 400 official citizens from an applicant pool exceeding 15,000. Jackson stated, “We need to be selective when it comes to citizenship because it is a very small country. We prioritize applicants with in-demand skill sets such as medicine and policing.”
Jackson has encountered significant setbacks but remains hopeful. He insisted, “Our return to the land is merely a matter of when, not if. Croatia doesn’t claim ownership of the land, thus we rightfully possess it, and we believe we have a good chance of reclaiming it.”
Originally hailing from Australia, Jackson is set on transforming Verdis from a mere concept into a legitimate nation. He describes the experience of being in a territory he created as a magical revelation, stating, “To the ordinary observer, it appears to be just a dense forest. However, when you realize you’re in a country you built, it becomes extraordinary.”
