Olivia Corbiere is celebrating what she describes as a miracle recovery after a devastating skiing accident that left her with only a 5% chance of survival. The 23-year-old suffered catastrophic injuries during a ski trip in Bansko, Bulgaria, in March 2024.
Corbiere sustained severe trauma including a brain bleed, lung damage, a broken pelvis, and three fractured vertebrae when she fell approximately 15 feet into a ravine. Initially, the medical prognosis was grim, with doctors warning her parents that she might never speak again if she survived.
“We were told she had a 5% chance of living and may not speak,” her mother Linzi recalled. “It was devastating to hear that.”
Corbiere, who works as a kitchen designer in England, embarked on a five-day ski getaway with close friends and her younger sister, Phoebe. On March 17, early excitement filled the air as they planned their skiing day. Just before lunchtime, however, disaster struck.
“We were discussing where to eat, and that is one of my last memories before the accident,” she recounted.
As she navigated the ski path, Corbiere’s skis crossed, causing her to lose control. The unusually warm weather had melted the snow, making it difficult for her to maneuver as she normally would. Moments later, she slipped and plunged into the ravine.
Three fellow skiers jumped into action, diving into the ravine to rescue Corbiere while others promptly called for emergency assistance. Her sister and friends displayed remarkable courage and selflessness that day. “Their quick thinking is the primary reason I’m here today. They didn’t hesitate, despite the risks,” she said, expressing profound gratitude for their bravery.
After the fall, Corbiere was rushed to a hospital where medics described her head injury as unprecedented. In addition to various fractures, she faced a critical brain bleed that necessitated a four-hour emergency surgery. During the procedure, parts of her skull were removed to alleviate pressure.
Upon returning to the United Kingdom for further treatment, her family prepared for a lengthy journey toward recovery that doctors suggested could take months or even years. However, to everyone’s surprise, Corbiere made significant progress much sooner than anticipated.
“I don’t remember anything from the five weeks following the accident,” she explained. “But I started to regain my memory a few days after moving from intensive care to the neuro ward.”
Despite ongoing recovery challenges, including some hearing loss and nerve damage affecting one side of her face, her family remained hopeful. “We were told she might never talk, but she has proven everyone wrong. Each day, she grows stronger,” Linzi shared with relief.
Corbiere’s development has been remarkable. “Now, she can laugh and joke, which is such a positive sign for us,” her mother remarked, reflecting on the emotional toll of the incident.
Corbiere has returned home and even savored meals out with her family, an experience she cherished greatly. Her recovery story has resonated widely, drawing support and encouragement from people around the globe. “It amazes me how many kind-hearted individuals have reached out after hearing my story,” she stated.
Despite the traumatic experience, Corbiere remains optimistic about returning to the slopes. “I’ve skied for years and love it. I don’t want an accident to deter me from pursuing what I enjoy,” she expressed firmly. “Once I fully recover, I would love to ski again.”
Her family continues to support her recovery journey, bolstered by the kindness of strangers who have reached out to offer encouragement. Olivia Corbiere’s inspirational story stands as a testament to resilience, the power of friendship, and hope in the face of adversity.
Corbiere’s journey underscores the importance of community and support during challenging times. As her family and friends rallied around her during her darkest moments, their unwavering encouragement played a crucial role in her recovery. “Thinking about the tremendous outpouring of love from everyone gives me hope,” she concluded.
This story serves as a reminder of human strength and the unexpected miracles that healing journeys can bring.
