Zachary Levi has openly declared himself a Hollywood outsider, attributing this status to his political beliefs. The star of Shazam! revealed that his support for former President Donald Trump has led to some colleagues choosing not to collaborate with him.
Levi recently discussed his experiences during an interview, where he noted that people in the industry prefer to distance themselves from him as a result of his endorsement of Trump. He stated, “I know that there are people that would prefer not to work with me now because of my opinions. My team has let me know.”
In an encouraging message to conservatives in Hollywood, he remarked, “It’s now or never” for those who feel they cannot openly share their political views. Levi emphasized the importance of self-expression, particularly for those who may feel inclined to conceal their conservative beliefs.
Despite the backlash he faced for supporting Trump, Levi believes he still has support from others within the Hollywood community. He noted, “While there are some people who might prefer not to work with me anymore, there’s a lot of people on that side of the political spectrum who are even more inclined to hire me and to want to do business with me because ‘I need some people who voted another way.’”
He acknowledged that his public stance came with risks. Many who appreciated his boldness encouraged him, saying, “You know what? I give you a lot of props for that because that’s not an easy thing to do.”
Levi further elaborated on his complex feelings regarding Trump, admitting, “I was not a fan of Trump’s Trumpiness. I didn’t like a lot of these personal things, the ways that he carries himself a lot of the time. I understand people’s aversion.” He clarified that voting for Trump was not an endorsement of his character but rather a decision based on broader concerns. He pointed out, “Do I think the whole package is somehow perfect? No. In fact, most people who voted for Donald Trump recognize a lot of the imperfections in all of it. Nobody was saying, ‘This is the Orange Messiah.'”
In his conversation with Variety, Levi shed light on the hidden support he has received from fellow industry professionals. He claimed, “I know it to be true because I’ve gotten messages from lots of people who I won’t name but who were very grateful to me for taking the stand that I took. And also they would tell me, ‘I want to do that, but I’m so afraid.’” Levi encouraged his colleagues to embrace their convictions, saying, “You’ve got to keep trusting God. And if you feel compelled to step out in that way, then do it boldly and know that you’re going to be OK.”
In October, Levi publicly addressed comments made by Whoopi Goldberg on The View, where she suggested that Hollywood is primarily left-leaning. He contested her assertion, illustrating that Hollywood’s conservative presence is far more significant than she indicated. He pointed out that actors who openly express conservative views often do so when they have reached a certain point in their careers.
Levi stated, “What that means is there’s plenty — and by the way, they have sent me lots of messages — plenty of people in my industry in Hollywood that are terrified to publicly say that they would vote for Donald Trump or be conservative in any way.” He emphasized that fear of backlash leads to many conservative voices remaining silent in the industry.
Adding to the conversation, Levi expressed that the landscape of Hollywood is changing. He argued that the fear of industry backlash has lessened since the pandemic and other recent upheavals. He believes the criticism targeting conservative viewpoints is “eroded” and predicted that the dynamics will shift dramatically.
Levi’s call to action resonates strongly with like-minded individuals. He stated, “So anyway, my cry to all of you out there, you closeted conservatives, closeted Trump voters, y’all, it’s now or never, you know what I mean?” He encouraged those who feel compelled to speak out to do so without fear of repercussion, asserting, “Do whatever you feel like you need to do. If you need to come out publicly and say it, if you feel like you still can’t, then don’t.”
In September, he expressed his support for Trump at an event featuring Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard. During this appearance, Levi reflected on the broken state of the country, stating, “In a perfect world, in whatever that would look like, perhaps I would have voted for Bobby. But we don’t live in a perfect world. In fact, we live in a very broken one.” He voiced his concerns about individuals he believe are actively working to lead the country in a detrimental direction.
