After nearly three months of speculation, New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul has endorsed New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. This endorsement comes at a pivotal moment in the race, as Mamdani has gained momentum among voters.
In a social media post on Sunday evening, Hochul stated, “New York City deserves a mayor who will stand up to Donald Trump and make life more affordable for New Yorkers. That’s @ZohranKMamdani.” This strong affirmation from the state’s top Democrat could prove vital in aligning other influential party members behind Mamdani.
As the leading figure of the Democratic Party in New York, Hochul’s support may intensify pressure on key leaders like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who have yet to publicly back Mamdani. Without their endorsements, Mamdani has the opportunity to consolidate support among progressive voters.
Mamdani expressed gratitude toward the Governor, highlighting her role in unifying the party. He stated, “I am grateful to the Governor for her support in unifying our party—as well as the work she has done standing up to President Trump, securing free lunch meals for our kids, and expanding access to childcare.”
This endorsement is particularly significant given Mamdani’s rise within the political landscape. The 33-year-old democratic socialist and state lawmaker from Queens achieved a surprising victory in June, where he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and several other candidates to secure the Democratic Party’s mayoral nomination.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of their conversations. She remarked, “In the past few months, I’ve had frank conversations with him. We’ve had our disagreements. But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family.”
If elected, Mamdani will not only be the first Muslim mayor in New York City but also the first millennial to take on this role in the nation’s most populous city. Current public opinion polls place him as the clear frontrunner in a race dominated by Democrats.
The latest surveys from Quinnipiac University and NY Times/Siena College show Mamdani leading with a 22-point margin over both Cuomo and his other challengers. Additional data from Emerson University and The Hill also highlights Mamdani’s substantial lead, further solidifying his standing ahead of the election.
In this Democratic stronghold, the Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa finds himself trailing significantly behind. Sliwa, a co-founder of the Guardian Angels, has campaigned notably, yet remains a distant third, while the incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent after abstaining from the Democratic primary, occupies fourth place.
Despite their standings, both Sliwa and Adams continue to commit to their campaigns, even as reports surfaced suggesting that Trump’s advisors offered them roles in a potential administration should they withdraw from the race.
Mamdani’s impressive primary victory stemmed from a campaign centered around affordability and addressing the high cost of living in New York City. He managed to galvanize a grassroots base of supporters, along with crucial endorsements from national progressive icons like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
His adept use of social media, particularly platforms like TikTok, allowed him to engage younger, low-propensity voters effectively. Additionally, Mamdani has proposed transformative policies aimed at reshaping the city’s social landscape, such as eliminating fares for public transport, making City University of New York tuition-free, freezing municipal housing rents, providing free childcare services, and introducing government-run grocery stores.
Despite his popularity, Mamdani has faced backlash from his opponents over past critical remarks regarding the New York City Police Department and proposals to refocus certain police responsibilities towards community services and supportive programs. Governor Hochul addressed these concerns directly, emphasizing the necessity of resource allocation for police to maintain public safety, a directive that she claims Mamdani supports.
Further complicating matters, Hochul tackled the sensitive subject of Mamdani’s previous comments about Israel, stating the critical need to address the rise of antisemitism: “I’ve been glad to see him meet with Jewish leaders across the city, listening and addressing their concerns directly.”
Hochul’s endorsement not only stands to benefit Mamdani but may also bolster her own support as she prepares for her re-election campaign next year. By endorsing Mamdani, Hochul aligns herself with the progressive base, which is crucial for her political aspirations.
Mamdani, in turn, acknowledged Hochul’s efforts, expressing a commitment to teaming up on policies to improve affordability in the city. “I look forward to fighting alongside her to continue her track record of putting money back in New Yorkers’ pockets and building a safer and stronger New York City where no one is forced to leave just so they can afford to raise a family,” he stated.
However, the endorsement has drawn scrutiny from prominent Republicans. Representative Elise Stefanik, an ally of Trump, criticized Hochul for supporting Mamdani, labeling him a danger to New York City’s future. “At the exact moment when New Yorkers are looking for strong leadership from their Governor with a majority opposing Zohran Mamdani, Kathy Hochul embraces this raging Communist who will destroy New York making it less affordable and more dangerous,” she claimed in a statement.
As the election approaches, the dynamics of the New York City mayoral race become increasingly complex. Mamdani’s path to victory will undoubtedly be influenced by both Hochul’s endorsement and the ongoing responses from his opponents.
